A Day in the Life of… Jim Mahon J


5:30: Alarm rings; stagger to the treadmill for about 45 min- utes of cardio (try to do this at least three to four times during the work week).


7:00: Depart home for one-hour commute to Akron from Warren, OH.


8:30: Official workday begins with a review and/or replies to emails and any after-hour voice messages that may have been re- ceived.


8:45: Make final notes for weekly staff meeting. 9:00: Attend weekly staff meeting to review the budget and provide/hear departmental updates.


10:00: Meet with Allyson (Destination Sales & Social Me- dia Manager) to finalize the launch of our new blog.


10:30: Work on finalizing the artwork and the first blog post entry for the upcoming launch; I should mention that we had a local artist create a fictional family called the “Summits” - they will be the voices of the new blog!


11:00: Leave the office to attend the monthly meeting of “Adventures in Northeast Ohio” (a 15-county regional marketing organization).


1:00: Return to the office. First order of business - review/ reply to emails and numerous voice messages.


1:20: Make some final notes for a 1:30 conference call with 128 members of the Akron Destination Marketing Fund (ADMF).


1:30: Join conference call to discuss current applications for ADMF grants and other items on the agenda.


2:30: Hit the pop machine for a thirst-quenching and un- named (for legal reasons, of course) diet soda.


2:35: Spend some time working on the agenda for our up- coming Board’s Destination Development Committee meeting.


3:15: Shifting my “agenda-writing” gears to work on another upcoming meeting of our “Partnerships in Motion - The Hospitality Marketing Roundtable Series.”


3:50: Meet with Mary (Bureau Director of Sales) to discuss the final details of a reception we are hosting for our partners the next evening on the stage of the Akron Civic Theatre.


4:15: Begin story outline and note potential photos for an upcoming issue of Food Traveler magazine.


4:30: Take a call from the Ohio Travel Association’s Deputy Director to discuss the status of our upcoming “Conference on Tour- ism” sponsorship efforts (I’m serving as the committee’s Co-Chair). 5:05: Try to create order out of chaos (the top of my desk)…


jotting down which items have to be on my immediate to-do list for tomorrow.


5:30: Leave for my one-hour commute home… I must mow my lawn tonight before the sun sets!

im Mahon is the Vice President of Marketing & Brand Management for the Akron/Summit (OH) CVB and the John S. Knight Convention Center where he currently manages all aspects of both organizations’ marketing, advertising and public relations initiatives. He has been in the tourism industry for his entire career, having worked previously at the Avalon Inn & Resort and the Trumbull County (OH) CVB.


Jim has served on the boards and committees of several professional organizations, including: the Ohio Society of Association Executives, the Society of Government Meeting Professionals and the Ohio Travel Association.
