CISG14 ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION – WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?

By Luke Taylor, Assistant Director of IT Services, University of Bristol

What motivates us to atend a conference like CISG2014? I would suggest that great value is created by atending this occasion; a face to face gathering, sharing and discussing challenges and opportunities. Many of us are struggling with the

paradox of saving costs while improving service quality. The potential of Cloud as a solution can end up in a smog of disparate, poorly integrated systems. Whilst we struggle with Service Oriented Architectures and vendor management, our universities need strong, responsive

IT leadership that will fulfil the need to be more reactive to the national and global environment of uncertainty. CISG14 will provide delegates the

prospect to glance back over the last year of change, look forward to new opportunities, discuss how to shape the future, and learn from exceptional leaders, how to achieve the foreseeable and prepare for the beyond. Our programme opens with a keynote

from Professor Andrea Nolan, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University. Professor Nolan will relate her University’s focus on academic disciplines which are connected to contemporary challenges, with the context within which our higher education must continue to achieve; Simon Walker, a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellow, will bring us insight into future curriculum/ learning design approaches and the potential for supporting technology; James Smith, Head of Process and Systems Improvement at Birkbeck, will bring their institutional approach to the transformation of IT delivery. Day two begins with some black

sky thinking from Rachel Armstrong, Senior TED Fellow and Living Architect. This will be a chance to expand our creative thinking without any reliance on technology progressions from a distant past; Iain Liddell, Assistant Director Governance and Corporate Services at Brunel University, will discuss

Organisational Origami and the impact on governance and policy evolution; our facilitated Crowdsourcing sessions will allow delegates to breakout from the plenary sessions, to discuss solutions to four key challenges, providing feedback on Friday morning and helping to shape future CISG activities; Andy Youell, Director of the Higher Education Data and Information Improvement Programme (HEDIIP), will bring us the latest about the holistic approach the programme is taking to data standards across the sector; Drew Cook, Director of ICT, will reflect upon a new approach to IT strategy development through Enterprise Architecture at the University of Lincoln; Paul Hopkins from HE Shared Services will challenge us to consider whether higher education is in a Perfect storm – or has there been a seismic shift? Day three, the final day, closes with

learnings from others – James Munson, Director of IT at UCAS will discuss their move from on-premise infrastructure to the Amazon and Microsoft Cloud solutions that now underpin their IT; Chris Davies, Tribal Group first Director of Transformational Change will talk through Tribal’s Transformation approach to successfully achieving change programmes; Andrew McMillan, Principal at Engaging Service, will bring

his expertise in customer experience and employee engagement to help you deliver a distinct and differentiated customer experience and enhanced customer service. The Conference closing keynote will

come from Richard Noble. Richard has specialised in the successful delivery of high risk ventures such as the world land speed records through Thrust2 and ThrustSSC. Richard is currently Project Director for Bloodhound SSC, the next supersonic car, which has as its goal to get to 1,000 miles per hour. Richard will discuss how to achieve success in high risk/ high stress ventures. Throughout the Conference there are

opportunities to network with colleagues, and also with corporate partners through the Exhibition and Business Showcases. This year’s Conference is centrally

located at The Midland Hotel, Manchester. With its 100-year history, which includes the meeting of Rolls and Royce, the hotel boasts charm and character, along with its excellent conference facilities, accommodation and catering. CISG2014 brings together a wide range

of suppliers, with an audience that includes leaders and senior staff (IT and otherwise) from across the UK education sector, who have a common interest in delivering IT systems value for the advantage of their institutions and their customers. UB
