Q: How would you sum up the best ‘student experience’?
PATRICIA PRICE (CARDIFF): The best student experience is one where students benefit from high-quality teaching on robust and intellectually challenging programmes, where they can actively engage with and participate in their learning experience in an environment of top-quality research and scholarship, with access to a wide range of tailored support services and opportunities to meet new people and build friendships that will last a lifetime.
JOANNE COOKE (DE MONTFORT): Student experience is a top priority for DMU, as evidenced by the huge range of on-campus activities throughout the year. We think that excellent
teaching and learning is a very important part of the student experience. DMU has received 18 National Teaching Fellow awards since the scheme began, which is Higher Education’s most prestigious teaching award.

1. High-quality staff and teaching
MARK PEEL (LEICESTER): It is an experience that brings out the best in you – the student, focused on your success, from induction through to graduation with excellent
prospects. Top-class
research and teaching is essential. But exceptional
student experience is more than that. It takes into account the type of
student you will be learning with and the type of staff who will be teaching you, and their dedication to your success. Lynn Dobbs (Roehampton): The ideal
experience involves first-rate learning and teaching with a large amount of contact time with expert lecturers. Growing as individuals through extra- curricular skills, and building fruitful and productive friendships is absolutely key for our students, so we invest actively in clubs and societies.
SIMON PEATFIELD (SOUTHAMPTON): The best student experience is an environment where students are encouraged, challenged and supported to do the best they can in all activities, and to help them in applying their knowledge and experience in taking the first steps towards a successful transition in the next phase of their career development.
Q: What do you offer your students which is unique and helps boost your student recruitment and retainment?
PATRICIA PRICE (CARDIFF): Cardiff University offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of professional programmes available in the UK, which contributes to our consistently high employability figures. The excellent student experience at the University is achieved through a strong partnership and a high level of engagement between our students, the Students’ Union and the University. Our Student Charter is a pathway to
everything key to the Cardiff experience and our The Way Forward strategy is driving our ambition to provide a positive and enriching experience for all our students.
