Higher education triumphs in Glasgow
The 20th Commonwealth Games saw more than 140 records broken as elite athletes from 71 nations and territories competed for glory. Robyn Bainbridge looks at the British athletes who achieved success in Scotland, and who have university sports facilities to thank for it
Francesca Halsall Team England
Age: 24 Sport: Swimming Club: Loughborough ITC, coached by James Gibson Loughborough University, named University of the Year for Sport by The Times Good University Guide 2014, acted as the training ground for many athletes in anticipation of the Commonwealth Games. The campus is home to England’s largest concentration of world- class training facilities, boasting a 50m swimming pool and the renowned Powerbase gym.

Siobhan-Marie O’Connor Team England
Gold and silver medallist Halsall wowed audiences at this year’s Games, earning England two gold and two silver medals. Beating previous personal bests and setting new Commonwealth records, including her 23.96 seconds in the 50m freestyle. to complete a Commonwealth Games sprint double.
Chris Walker-Hebborn Team England
Age: 17 Sport: Swimming, 200m individual medley & 100m breaststroke Training: British Swimming’s National Training Centre at the University of Bath coached by Dave McNulty and Graeme Antwhistle. The University of Bath’s Department of Sports and Recreation manages and organises a wide range of activities under Team Bath, the University’s sports brand. The £30m Sports Training Village has been the training base of some of the world’s top athletes, and the following are just a few of those
that did so in preparation for the Commonwealth Games. Gold, Silver and Bronze medallist Gold – 200m individual medley Silver – 200m freestyle Silver – 4x100m freestyle relay Silver – 4x100m medley relay Bronze – 4x200m freestyle relay Bath-based O’Connor performed fantastically at this year’s Games, winning a total of six medals. Siobhan underwent intense training at British Swimming’s National Training centre at the University of Bath, and has been a member of Team Bath since 2009.
