IDENTify – How ProofID is harnessing the power of Social Identity Management for the University of Hull

The Challenge – Engaging with students online in 2014 In the current climate, universities are always looking for ways to engage with pre-applicants sooner and more effectively and to build meaningful lifelong relationships with students. Additionally, the student experience is a key way to differentiate in a highly competitive world. At the same time, students

increasingly expect to consume university services in the same way that they consume the internet – seamlessly and using their existing online identities. The new breed of students are ‘born in the cloud’ and are impatient online – Gartner estimates that in 62% of cases, users will abandon a login or registration process if it involves filling in a form.

The Solution – Social Identity Management with IDENTify The solution to these trends lies in allowing students to ‘Bring their Own Identity’ (BYOI) – i.e. using a social identity to access university resources in a secure and seamless way. IDENTify from ProofID is the only

true next generation enterprise identity management platform for academia; its unique social identity proofing capabilities enable universities to reap the benefits from offering true BYOI.

IDENTify offers the following benefits to universities: Pre-applicants can register interest with a university using their social identity (e.g. Facebook login) and receive seamless access to taster course modules.

Students can securely access university applications, such as the VLE or library system using social identities, through an online social identity proofing process.

Students can link social identities together (e.g. Facebook, Twiter and LinkedIn) to provide multiple social

channels for enhanced communication with Alumni.

IDENTify at the University of Hull ProofID has recently started work on a Proof of Concept of IDENTify at the University of Hull. Tony Ward, Project Manager at the

University of Hull, explains why the University chose to work with ProofID: “IDENTify is unique in that its social identity management capabilities and offers us some very interesting ways of interacting with potential, current and past students. A key element of the Proof of Concept is to allow pre- applicants to register interest with the University via their Facebook login and then gain access to a relevant taster module in our VLE.

By using social login, we hope

to have much greater uptake of the service, as there are no online forms involved. “We are also very excited about the

possibilities for alumni. IDENTify will allow users to build a consolidated identity of all of their social identities and the University can use these social channels to stay in touch with them after they have left the University. We believe this will be much more effective than ‘email for life’ and will allow ex-students to remain engaged with the University.” Proof ID is a specialist provider of

managed IDM solutions in academia, with a particular focus on next generation technologies and social identity management. UB
