Welcome
When I started my university life at Bristol around, ahem, two decades ago, the term ‘student experience’ was not one we were familiar with. Equipped with a full grant courtesy of the County Council, and not a tuition fee in sight, we felt privileged to be offered a place at all. We may have had a few part-time jobs but this was more about money to friter away than survival. relatively inexpensive at the time and we were enjoying the novelty of being away from home, unsupervised, and broadening our horizons in some style. How times have changed. Rather than pupils competing for places, universities are now in the race to atract the best students. With the lift on the cap on student numbers coming and universities able to offer places to an unlimited number of high-flying students with ABB+ or equivalent results, universities are booming like never before and the choice on offer for students is vast.
As a consequence, ‘student experience’ is now the buzz word on every Vice- Chancellor’s lips. In this issue, we talk to a number of leading universities about the hot topic of providing the best possible service to this new generation of HE customers, particularly if tuition fees were to rise in the near future. It shows that our universities are working harder than ever to atract and retain ever more discerning students.
Until next time,
