campus provider (FXPlus) in determining their strategies for improving student experience. The officers were able to use the priorities to align term dates so that students from both universities arrived at the same time, increased mental health awareness, supported new social spaces on campus, fixed bus prices and accommodation costs on campus and led to the commitment from institutions to build a new sports centre on the Penryn Campus.
MARK PEEL (LEICESTER): Since 2008, the University of Leicester has invested £145m in campus improvements. Our award- winning Students’ Union development is another example of improving the student experience – it was done with the involvement of students. Students everywhere are coming to university wanting more than just a degree; they are concerned about the whole lifestyle of being a student – from the particular bands that have gigged at the Union right the way through to whether the University has Fairtrade status.
LYNN DOBBS (ROEHAMPTON): In total £80m is being invested within the next three years to create the University’s first purpose-built library, which will be a landmark building on campus and emphasises our growing reputation for groundbreaking research. On top of that, brand new student accommodation
is being created on campus which will provide 600 rooms over two sites. Students can also opt to live in zone one accommodation in Vauxhall, giving them immediate access to central London whilst having only a short journey to the campus.
SIMON PEATFIELD (SOUTHAMPTON): We’ve recently invested in a number of new facilities and services to help boost the student experience. These include the brand new Mayflower Halls soon to open in the city centre. We’re also engaged in the redevelopment of the Boldrewood campus together with Lloyd’s Register in a project worth over £140m to bring LR’s research and development team to Southampton whilst providing new state- of-the-art ship science facilities to the University. The facilities at our world-renowned RJ
Mitchell wind tunnel have been extended so that work with world-leading elite athletes, automotive and aeronautic companies can continue.
MARK BARLOW (SURREY): All students who put the University of Surrey down as their first choice are guaranteed a room in University accommodation in their first year. Rooms in the University's on- campus accommodation are organised
by bands, with band A being the most basic for those on a budget and band E for those who want an en suite shower and a mini-fridge. In addition, the University-owned
Surrey Sports Park is home to a 50-metre swimming pool, climbing wall, two cricket squares, tennis and badminton facilities and a coffee shop and social area. There are also many more facilities, including a 120-station health and fitness centre, three multi-purpose sports arenas, squash courts, 10 grass pitches, and exercise and fitness studios. The University sports park is home to
the Harlequins rugby team and was a training centre for London 2012 teams
