The recent and widely-publicised Ofsted report on school sport highlights the excellent sporting provision at Dauntsey’s School, Wiltshire. The school features as a case study in ‘Going the Extra Mile - Excellence in Competitive School Sport’, which was commissioned after the 2012 Olympics.
Researchers for Ofsted noted that Dauntsey’s has a “distinctive ethos in
which sport is part of daily life at school.” It praised the way the school “fosters team spirit and promotes the right attitudes and behaviours needed to play competitive sports well”.
The report, published in June, explores why
so many Team GB athletes were educated in private rather than state schools. It stated that Dauntsey’s “provides fi rst-class sports facilities and employs a large team of

specialist teachers and coaches. The Director of Sport oversees the work of the heads of PE at GCSE and A-level, plus a team of expert coaches in rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, tennis, swimming and riding… The sporting character of students is clearly evident on match days. Students play hard, play to win, and show that they can win and lose graciously.” W:

CANFORD SUMMER SPORTS COURSES A SUCCESS
Canford School recently hosted its third four-day Specialist Sports Academy. Making use of the school’s exceptional sporting facilities, the Academy was aimed at players in Years 6-11 wanting to develop their sporting, teamwork and leadership skills. Learners in both senior and junior groups were able to choose from four specialist sports: rugby, hockey, netball and football. Canford’s own specialist sports staff were joined by external coaches
including former Samoan rugby World Cup captain Junior Paramore and Stephen Purches, a former West Ham professional, AFC Bournemouth Development coach and UEFA licensee. The school also hosted a Multisports course for children in Years 5-7 who wanted to try their hand at a wider range of sports and activities on offer at Canford, including making use of the Combined Cadet Force assault course and climbing tower.
