SOLIHULL CRICKETERS BOWLED OVER BY NEW FACILITIES
Solihull School has capped an outstanding county championship winning cricket season by introducing new, state-of-the-art training facilities.
The school is one of the fi rst in the country
to have its own spin bowling machine, along with all-weather nets, to help develop the stars of the future.
The arrival of the new facilities coincided with the school’s First XI, Under 15 and Under 13 teams all celebrating success as
Warwickshire Cup winners, and the Under 12s reaching the county cup fi nal, in a season in which seven players represented their county or region. They included First XI captain Oliver Haley, who scored a century against Warwickshire Imps, took fi ve wickets in an innings in a two- day match against Monmouth School, and was selected for the senior Warwickshire 2nd XI – and Fahd Janjua, who took fi ve wickets against Bromsgrove at Under 15 level and also played for the First XI. The new ‘Merlyn’ spin bowling machine,
used by professional clubs, will enable pupils of all ages to test their technique consistently against Test match quality spin bowling. Designed and built by Bola to give England cricketers greater experience of spin bowling, the machine can deliver spinning balls of every imaginable variety with the coach having complete control over line, speed and fl ight. Darren Maddy, the former Warwickshire and England Test all-rounder who is now Master in charge of Cricket at Solihull, said: “The machine has opened the eyes of our cricketers to the thrill of facing a top-quality spinner. It will come into its own midway through the winter term when we start training sessions for next summer.” Here, Darren prepares to feed Solihull’s new bowling machine for cricketer Fahd Janjua.
LEO CLEANS UP AT KARATE CHAMPS
Congratulations to Leo Tregear from Oakwood Prep School in Chichester, who scooped three silver medals and the trophy for overall performance at the recent GKI National Karate championships. Leo, 10, competed with the Chichester Karate Club, where he has been a member for over four years. Leo’s achievement is particularly special as he was diagnosed at the age of fi ve with Perthes disease, a debilitating condition in which the ball of the hip joint softens and dies. After three operations and lengthy times in traction and on crutches, and although he is still recovering from the damage and deformity caused by the degenerative disease, Leo has emerged as one of Oakwood’s leading sports players. “Leo is one of the most inspirational boys
I have ever met,” says Head of Games Matt Vella. “When he joined us in 2012, he was recovering from his last operation and we had no idea how much sport he would be able to do. Initially, karate and swimming were really the only activities that Leo could safely participate in, but as he became stronger, he competed in a wide range of sports, and his determination, positive attitude and natural skill has meant that he is now one our fastest runners, a fantastic football and rugby player and an excellent all-rounder. We are very proud of the progress that he has made and he is a great ambassador for Oakwood.”
