Wealth of nations

Leading sportswear providers Kukri kitted out the hugely successful Team England at this summer’s Commonwealth Games. And they could oversee your next kit overhaul

This summer we were wowed by the action from Glasgow, as the XX Commonwealth Games put on a fantastic spectacle of sport. Seventeen sports were

competed, with Team England topping the medal table with a new record medal haul of 174. This also coincided with the first time that Team England have had a central kit contract, with all kit supplied by top sportswear manufacturers Kukri Sports. “It was really exciting for us to be announced as Team England’s Offi cial Kit Supplier for the Glasgow Games,” said Laura Thomas, Kukri’s Group Marketing Director. “Alongside providing kit for Team England, we also kitted out teams from 12 different nations – from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to Canada, the Cayman Islands and Papua New Guinea! “It was a really exciting challenge

providing kit for so many different athletes. One of our specialities is providing kit for schools. As schools play many different sports and the Games featured many different teams, the challenge was similar!” Kukri worked with Team England

athletes to create the team’s design, which was inspired by the Team England Lion. As part of their partnerships with Scottish Athletics and Welsh Athletics, Kukri also provided kit for their athletes in the Games – including Kukri Ambassador, Scottish Paralympic sprinter and Gold medallist Libby Clegg. “Developing our kit alongside the athletes who’ll be using it means that we’re providing the best possible kit for each situation,” Laura explains. “The exact specifi cation of the kit worn by our elite teams – whether that’s at the Commonwealth Games or anywhere else – can all be ordered through our website, or by speaking to our sales team. Designing the kit with the athletes helps you create a kit design that is meaningful and instils pride and passion.”

Here are a few quick tips on getting a great look for your school:

> Choose a design that will work well with the various sports your school plays. Some designs lend themselves well to jerseys, while others are better for

dresses. Your kit manufacturer’s design team will be able to help and advise.

> Choose a few key pieces for everyone. For Team England, this was the range of leisurewear, in particular the Ceremonial Tracksuit, which we saw 174 times on the medal podium. Other great options are hoodies and fl eeces, jackets and bags.

> Introducing a third colour to your kit can help give you a really strong identity. For Team England, alongside the traditional red and white, maroon – a heritage colour – was added. For Scottish Athletics, we incorporated purple into the design of their athletics kit, alongside the traditional blue and white.

> Don’t be afraid to consult with staff and students for design ideas – who knows what they might come up with! The beauty of modern kit manufacturing means that almost anything goes.

Final word to Kukri’s Managing Director, Phil Morris: “We’ve always believed that having the best possible kit improves performance, and this appears to have been vindicated by the results from Glasgow 2014. Athletes who look good feel good – and perform better. It’s been an honour.” ISS
