Dartfi sh’s multimedia products can hugely enrich your sports training regimes – and even allow far-fl ung parents to follow the team

› Are you currently using video in some form to communicate with your students in your sports coaching? Perhaps you use a tablet or phone-based app to capture and play back video to students, or reference video clips from different websites and online resources – or maybe you’re filming and selecting the key points to share with pupils, parents and fellow coaches. How much simpler life would be if there

was one seamless solution for capturing, enhancing and sharing video with your peers, students, parents and even alumni. The good news is that technology from Dartfish does just that, with a suite of tablet and phone-based apps, Windows software and the online video sharing platform, Dartfish TV. The company’s products include

Dartfish Express, which provides a simple, high-quality solution to in-lesson feedback and video analysis. Elsewhere, Dartfish Note enables pitch and court-side multi- layer tagging – i.e. marking events and outcomes against the timeline of the video for later review. So, for example, you can mark all the rucks, scrums or line-outs in a given rugby match, or every time a certain bowler bowls a no-ball, and then look through them all in isolation without the need to trawl through the entire footage. Dartfish Windows software, meanwhile,

opens up wide-ranging possibilities for the capture and import of video, being compatible with HD webcams, HD camcorders and IP cameras. This allows for more advanced video

editing, enhancement and analysis – such as side-by-side comparison (useful for comparing, say, the relative stances of two different athletes), video overlay, drawings and various measurements.

The final piece to the jigsaw is Dartfish.

TV, an online video platform that provides Dartfish-enhanced video sharing with powerful keyword and search functionality. Video can be made publicly available, or shared securely between discrete groups of staff, pupils and parents.

Pillinger has been the main driver behind their now extensive Dartfish.tv channel. “The effect of visual feedback on students is undeniable,” James explains. “Dartfish has enabled us to use film to motivate and inform pupils as well as reinforce learning. It takes far less time and money than people imagine to integrate video analysis into the daily routine of teaching, and the positive change in attitudes among learners has had very tangible results.” “We currently use tagging panels to

ensure that pupils’ time is used efficiently. Our hockey coaches, for example, have then been able to present all the ‘circle entries’ or ‘penalty corner attack’ clips in isolation. Tagging projects from matches allow our coaches to analyse decision making and use positive and negative reinforcement to shape behaviour and optimise performance. “We also use the ‘live delay’ feature on

Dartfish TeamPro to give pupils immediate feedback. Playing and watching allows pupils and coaches to make immediate adjustments to technical execution. “Before adopting the technology we had

Dartfish Solutions are used by some

of the UK’s most successful sports organisations including the English Institute of Sport, Sport Wales, Sport Scotland, British Cycling, UK Athletics, The Lawn Tennis Association, the Rugby Football Union, English Cricket Board and many more. John Legg of Dartfish UK says: “The need to communicate simply and effectively is universal. Our applications can be applied to all levels of athlete, whether novice or elite.” Among the independent schools to

have embraced the Dartfish technology is Fettes College in Edinburgh, where James

to meet pupils and talk through footage: now we can do it remotely. Pupils have access 24/7 to the clips, and can engage in an ongoing dialogue with coaches. We even have coaches from national governing bodies, and professional sportspeople, commenting remotely on our Dartfish channel.” Since September the school has

uploaded almost 600 videos from iPhone and iPad. “Pupils have individual collections and teams have collections with highlights from the season, so parents who are unable to get to fixtures can watch the team play from anywhere in the world.” ISS
