Sony plans to commence external sales of its Sorplas fl ame-retardant recycled plastics in October 2014. Sorplas is made using
polycarbonate (PC) recycled from materials such as DVDs and optical sheets used in LCD televisions. Sony adds its own sulphur-based fl ame retardant to achieve a highly durable and heat-resistant plastic that uses up to 99% recyclate. Sony says that less than 1% of its sulphur-based fl ame retardant is needed to achieve the required fl ame resistance. As a result, the properties of the polycarbonate resin are retained and a high proportion of recycled materials can be used.

Mexichem to acquire Vestolit
Mexichem is to acquire Vestolit, Europe’s sixth largest PVC manufacturer, from
Strategic Value Partners for €219 million. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Vestolit is Europe’s only manufacturer of high-impact suspension PVC for weather- resistant windows and is Europe’s second-largest
producer of paste PVC for fl oors and wallpapers. The company’s total
installed PVC capacity is 415,000 tonnes/year. “The acquisition of Vestolit
is in keeping with our strategy of becoming a global, vertically integrated chemical company with a focus on high-end, specialized products,” said Antonio Carrillo, CEO of Mexichem. “This transaction is
an opportunity to expand our European footprint, enter a new market segment and acquire new technology and best practices for our global Chlorine Vinyl chain.” Vestolit will continue under
current management once the transaction is completed and will operate with its existing brand portfolio.

shuts plants in Brazil
PolyOne is closing its plastics compounding plants located in Diadema and Joinville, Brazil. “This asset realignment
will accelerate our specialty strategy in Brazil, stream- line our operations, and improve our fi nancial performance in the region,” said Robert Patterson, president and CEO of PolyOne. The company will continue to operate and invest in its facilities in Novo Hamburgo and Itupeva, Brazil The company expects to
incur cash costs of approximately US$5 million associated with the closures and non-cash charges of US$12 million.
