Headlines

• Total polymer demand in 2013 came to 81,000 tonnes accounting for just over 1% of the total African demand but 8.5% of the East African region.

Included in this report: • Detailed demand analysis by polymer and by country • The nature of processing carried out in each country • Country profi les with key facts, trends and stastics • Identifi cation of where the best growth opportunities are

AMI CONSULTING www.amiplastics.com

• The market is small in terms of size but the number of plastic converters being set up in the country is growing fast in part driven by tax rebates on machinery and raw materials.

• Uganda exports some of it plastic products to countries such as D.R. Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi. However, the South Sudan conflict caused significant losses to Ugandan manufacturers because of the spoilage of goods meant for that market.

• The plastics industry in Uganda is characterised by a handful of big scale manufacturing companies such as A K Plastics Limited (Mukwano group) or Nice House of Plastics and a large number of smaller companies. Most of these companies are located in Kampala, the capital, while the second and third highest densities of plastic converters is found in Eastern and Central Uganda respectively. AMI estimates that there are around 150 plastics processors in Uganda.

Kenya

• Rising local demand, especially in and around Kampala, for plastic household products, plastic bags, and toothbrushes among others has increased demand for PP and HDPE grades for injection moulding.

• Packaging has also grown fast, especially for soft drinks, the production of which has grown at an average of 12% annually since 2003. However, this has not translated into PET demand growth at the same rate as Uganda imports most of its plastic and packaging needs from regional and international suppliers.

Morocco

• After packaging, PVC pipes is the second highest end use in Uganda, demand for which has been boosted by a strong performance of the construction industry.

Libya

• Polymer demand is forecasted to grow at an average of 10% annually mainly driven by poverty reduction pushing plastic demand and import substitution. Also, improved power availability from the Bujagali Hydropower plant on the river Nile is expected to allow plastic converters to work more than 12 hours per day (their current limitation to avoid peak hours).

• The Chinese company Foton has announced that it will open Uganda’s first vehicle assembly plant. However, the potential for attracting moulding activities of technical parts will be seriously endangered by limited locally skilled labour and parts are more likely to be imported from Kenya.
