of the portfolio with phthalate-free and bio-based plasticizers is an ideal addition to our existing Vestinol product family,” notes Rainer Fretzen, head of Evonik’s Performance Intermediates business line.

New investments in production BASF also says that it has been experiencing strong demand for alternatives to traditional phthalates in recent years. In May, the company started up its second plant for Hexamoll DINCH, doubling capacity to 200,000 tonnes/yr. Hexamoll was launched in 2002, and BASF says it is now an established plasticizer in food packaging, medical devices and toys. It is also increasingly used in the fl ooring and wall covering industry. Perstorp says that recent major investments it has made in Stenung- sund, Sweden, have enabled it to

Jerker Olsson, Perstorp’s VP Business Unit Oxo, says that the company will soon have one of the most competitive plasticizer production platforms in Europe. Perstorp’s Emoltene 100 is a DPHP. The REACH sunset date for the four low molecular weight phthalates has triggered increased demand for Emoltene 100 as a non-classifi ed alternative, the company says, especially in wire and cable applications.

Emoltene 100 is also used in roofi ng membranes, tarpaulins, swimming pool liners and various automo- tive applications. Pevalen, meanwhile, is intended for close-to-consumer applica- tions, such as fl ooring, coated textiles, and toys. Perstorp is currently seeking food contact approval for the new product.

Several suppliers of ‘green’ plasticizers have been busy investing in new capacity expansions
