signifi cant plastics processing investments require the building of dedicated power generation units, adding cost and complexity to operations.

Political instability is another key challenge in Africa, both north and south of the Sahara, which can seriously impact on investor confi dence and local demand. On the other hand, the reconstruction required after political confl icts can also be a growth driver in the continent as has occurred with Ivory Coast after its post-election crisis of 2011.

What will the future bring? It is clear that plastics will be called on to play a vital role in this changing continent. In its report, AMI forecasts 8% per year average increases in Africa over the next fi ve years, with diverse levels of annual growth varying from 5% in South Africa to 15% in Ivory Coast. The opportunities are many and actions are being

taken by African governments and private investors to face the challenges. These are some of the measures announced:

 Protective measures have been announced across Africa to enable national plastic converters to better face fi erce competition from cheaper Chinese imports.

 Many governments in Africa have approved signifi cant investments for projects to increase and improve power supply. Ethiopia is an outstanding example, planning to become a regional power hub. It has brought along projects such as the Grand Renaissance Dam, the largest hydropower project on the African continent.

 The creation of tax free business parks and special economic industrial zones is attracting greater foreign investment for manufacturing. The special economic zone (SEZ) of Viana in Angola is a good example.  Current lack of availability of raw materials will improve if the new polypropylene capacity announced by Dangote Group in Nigeria is realised. It is expected to come on stream between 2018 and 2019. Also greater availability of polyethylene is expected following the agreement signed by Sidpec to establish a new facility in Egypt of 400,000 tonnes/year. Polyethylene availabil- ity will increase as well with Sasol’s ethylene expansion, expected to reach full capacity by 2017.
