IMTS Pavilion: EDM
company’s booth will include a number of demonstrations that integrate automation, including a fully automated mold manufacturing cell featuring a D300 five-axis VMC, a V22 graphite machining center, a EDAF3 sinker EDM and a U53j wire EDM tended by an Erowa robot.
The company will also feature their U3 and U6 wire EDM machines, which, in response to growing concerns about a generational skills gap, are designed for ease of use. “The U3 and U6 offer enhanced machine performance in a design that makes competitive cycle times and high degrees of accuracy and finish easy to achieve, no matter the condition or application,” said Brian Pfluger, EDM product line manager at Makino. “With the addition of our new HyperCut technology and Hyper-i control, even novice operators can program and produce leading-edge part finishes in the most complex feature geometries—a significant competitive advantage for shops experiencing difficulty replacing skilled EDM operators.” In addition to the demonstrations and displays at IMTS, Makino plans to host five ‘lunch-and-learn’ events throughout the week. Each session is scheduled to include presentations from Makino customers, discussing real-world manufacturing challenges, and how they applied technology to their opera- tions to become more competitive and more profitable.
—Michael C. Anderson Indexing System for Wire EDM
Macro Index element is a manual indexing system for wire EDM machines using the 3R Macro System. Its main feature is its ease of use, and quick angle refer- ence in 0.1° steps. A weight of 2 kg makes it easy to handle and its compact size of 75.5-mm diameter × 74.5-mm height will fit in all models of wire EDM ma- chines. It’s produced of highly corrosion- resistant Bohler-Uddeholm Stavax stainless steel for long life with Elmax hard-metal XY-references for minimum wear. System 3R USA LLC Ph: 847-439-4888 E-mail:

Wire EDM New Volumetric Taper Compensation with four-axis over burn control (TPCMP) is being introduced on the FANUC RoboCut Alpha-CiA Series with a CNC FANUC Series 31i-WB control. This taper compensation feature offers enhanced taper accu- racy through compensa- tion of top and bottom cutting
amounts us- ing a single value, and works with any material, thickness or angle within machine
specifications. A new single-access, easy-to-use FANUC-built CCR Rotary Table is now available exclusively on FANUC Ro- boCut EDMs, providing the range of motion that manufactur- ers in industries such as aerospace and medical require. The rotary table also offers a water leak monitoring function that shuts the machine down upon water detection to minimize water-related repairs. Methods Machine Tools Ph: 978-443-5388 Web site:

Wire EDM with Tilt/Rotary Table The Cut 200 Ded- icated features a built-in, B-C tilt/ rotary table to easily cut com- plex aerospace alloy components such as turbine disks using C-axis rotation and ± 20° B-axis tilt. It also incorporates on-machine, in-
process inspection that encompasses a measuring probe and supporting software. The machine reportedly delivers some of the industry’s highest levels of speed, performance, quality and productivity. To significantly reduce noncut times, the Cut
