A RESPONSIBLE SECTOR A strong ethos of sustainability can not only strengthen a University’s appeal to students but also improve the experience in so many different ways. Our HE institutions are working to create sustainable universities which go beyond being carbon neutral and actually have a positive effect on the environment. We asked how important environmental and corporate responsibility league tables are for universities to atract firstly students and secondly funding. Although not thought as influential in atracting students, league tables do help


METHODOLOGY


University Business conducted a survey of readers in April - May 2014 via its website and through email response. In total, 290 people took part, of which the vast majority have direct influence on university development strategy, management, operations, procurement decisions or a combination of these.

In the survey, 80% of people thought the league tables were ‘quite’ or ‘very’ important for atracting funding although a lower proportion (54%) found them ‘quite’ or ‘very’ important for boosting student numbers. The criteria of the People and Planet Green League include ethical procurement and Fairtrade, sustainable food, student and staff engagement waste and recycling and carbon management. Corporate responsibility and environmental considerations need to be ingrained in a university’s development strategy and cannot merely be an afterthought. Integrating that approach with ideas and action from suppliers and partners will be the best route to success.”
