Notingham secures £162 million support


More than 1,200 PhD students will have their studies funded thanks to record levels of funding success at Notingham University. Over the last year, the University has


had unprecedented success in securing awards totaling £162m to support a growth in doctoral studentships. The funding is a significant investment


in postgraduate education, enabling 1,295 students to train, thanks to the creation of seven new Centres for


New grant for NCRM


The National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) team at the University of Southampton has been awarded a £6.25m grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The coordinating hub of NCRM has


been based at the University of Southampton since the centre was first established in 2004. The


new centre structure will be a collaborative partnership between the universities of Southampton, Edinburgh and Manchester. Dean of the Faculty of Social and


Human Sciences at the University of Southampton, Professor Jane Falkingham, said: "I am delighted by the excellent news that NCRM has been refunded for its third five-year period.


It is a reflection of the significant contribution NCRM has made to the understanding and development of methods within the social sciences since its inception. "I am confident that over the next


five years Patrick Sturgis and his team will continue to push the boundaries, ensuring UK social science is at the forefront of research and training."


Doctoral Training (CDTs) and the extension of five existing centres. Five of the 12 CDTs will be led by


Notingham, and all 12 will train the brightest young postgraduates to tackle pressing global challenges and keep the UK at the cuting edge of scientific research. Around 45% (577) of the studentships will be based at Notingham. Professor Saul Tendler, Pro-Vice-
