Welcome
When we started planning this July ‘sustainability’ issue of University Business, we had presumed that we’d find a whole host of inspirational projects and initiatives happening in the wonderful world of HE. And we weren’t disappointed. From carbon footprint reduction to
electric vehicles, on-campus allotments and green technology, the UK university sector is leading the way in sustainable development which bodes very well for the future.
There is no doubt in my mind that universities which embrace sustainability will prove more atractive to the students

of the future. As Tim Pryce from the Carbon Trust points out on p5, “Universities have an exciting opportunity to lead the way to a low-carbon economy in the UK.”
Campus developments Speaking of sustainability,
we recently carried out a new survey, in conjunction with Aramark, to discover what our readers really think about the direction for development of our campuses. From 24/7 living, to issues of employability and sustainability ranking in league tables, the results have given us a real insight into the issues faced by
university managers in the future. You can read the results and analysis in this issue and we’d love to hear your feedback on our findings.
So from Blackpool to Exeter, London to Sheffield, the University Business team will be out and about at all the key HE events over the coming months. Please come up and say hello if you spot us!
Until next time,
Hannah Oakman, Managing Editor
