In Smart Health the presented expertise includes intelligent implants as well as – mainly in vitro – diagnostics. A variety of diagnostic approaches was showcased from organisations such as IMTEK, Roche Diagnostics, Stratec Biomedical, Qiagen Lake Constance, Robert Bosch and Bürkert Fluid Control Systems. The challenges and approaches of intelligent implants were highlighted by NMI, IMTEK and Cicor Microelectronics. An R&D consortium lead by Bosch and the IMS-Chips in Stuttgart, reported integration technologies for autonomous sensor systems for the use in the Internet of Things as well as for Smart Homes. Similarly, the latest achievements of a smart systems integration done by a group including Zeiss, Wittenstein and Schunk have been reported. They integrated a smart carrier including energy harvesting and energy management (Smart Energy), data logistics and bi-directional RF communications. Various printing technologies demonstrated the importance of highly integrated miniaturised assemblies and as an example a research institution at the IMTEK in Freiburg reported the printing of pure metals without the use of solvents using a high temperature nozzle equipment.

Beside the technical papers, Testo highlighted the cluster’s efforts in the field of innovation management. In its biggest of all expert groups the cluster explores ways to jointly integrate external resources where needed in a cooperative way, thus accelerating product and process innovations. The leading-edge cluster MicroTEC Südwest is funded with €40 million by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The industry in the cluster region provides the second half.
