IET Faraday Challenge Days

Activity days for students aged 12-13 years www.ietfaraday.org/challenge-days

Get your students involved – enter your school into one of our exciting Faraday Challenge Days.

The annual IET Faraday Challenge Days is an engineering-based competition for schools. Six teams of six students, aged 12-13 years, compete against one another to see who can design, create and promote the best solution to a given challenge. All challenges are genuine, real-life engineering problems.

They draw upon and reinforce learning from science, maths and design and technology lessons. Students need to demonstrate:

 Creativity and innovation  The ability to work as a team

 The capability to project manage and act as quality controllers

 Presentation skills …and more!

Recent challenges have included designing and building a device for remote surgery and a drinks dispenser for competitive race walkers.

The winners from each event receive prizes for themselves and their schools. The top three teams across the UK win an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Final to compete for a cash prize of up to £1,000 for their school. Applications to host a Faraday Challenge Day open in the spring term. So why not get involved?

DIY Faraday Challenge Days

Run your very own Faraday Challenge Day www.ietfaraday.org/diy-challenge

Run one of our past Faraday challenges in your school with our online DIY Faraday Challenge Days.

These are packages of guidelines and electronic resources that take you through the day, with an introductory presentation, handouts, video clips and printable Faradays; a currency for students to buy or hire resources.

This resource is free to download and most of the practical materials you’ll need are found in typical science or design and technology departments.

Why not invite STEM Ambassadors to give you a hand on the day and bring real-life engineering experience into the classroom? Check out our ‘Bringing engineers into the classroom’ section on page 7 of this booklet.
