// CHAMPIONSHIPS Are you ready for playdowns this season? by Dawn Leurquin, Event Services Manager

early registration discount is being offered again this season to those who register for events prior to two weeks before event deadlines. Be sure to take advantage of the savings if you can. Rules book

T Te 2013-14 United States Curling Association Rules of Curling & Com-

petition booklet is under construction and will be available on the USA Curling website, www.usacurl.org, as soon as possible. Once there, just click on “Events” in the menu items and then “Championships” and “Rules” to see the most recent published copy of the rules book. Online registration payments

Online registration payments must be made with Visa or MasterCard

this season. Be sure to take care of payment requirements right away be- cause once 11:59 p.m. on an event deadline date hits, any incomplete reg- istrations are wiped from the system. Athletes are responsible for making sure all entry requirements are complete. For team payments, call the office to request a credit card authorization

form. As your team members enter, we will apply the payments, as long as entries are taken care of well in advance of the deadline date. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. CT. Aſter 5 o'clock and before 11:59 p.m., credit card payments must be managed by registrants. Fiſth players/substitutes

Fiſth players will register where coaches register, under the “volunteer”

or “helper” section, as no fee is required. Others on the team who register in that location will be unregistered; only one person on teams of five players can register there; the other four players have to pay the team registration fee.

Coaches Association Te USA Curling Coaches Association opened for registrations in Janu-

ary. All coaches must be at least 21 years of age, are required to register online and complete the requirements as stated. For junior events, a coach or an adult representative must represent each competing team. Te team representative must register with the Coaches Association and complete the requirements, which include a National Center for Safety Initiatives background check, completing the SafeSport Handbook, and accepting the USOC SafeSport Training. Background checks can take up to 10 days to complete and at least 30

days for an international check should be allowed. SafeSport training is free to USA Curling members and includes a great set of tools for clubs and ath- letes to utilize so preventive sport misconduct measures can be exercised. Take advantage of this opportunity; it’s another great service brought to you through USA Curling. Te beginning of the Coaches Association oc- curred during the registration season so for those registering then, thank you for your patience as we made the transfer from one method of registra- tion to another. And thank you, coaches, for never complaining about the new requirements put into place to keep USA Curling athletes as safe as possible from the threat of misconduct in sport.
