Association Catch Up

Looking Ahead in Retail

The Shop and Display Equipment Association (sdea) The Shop and Display Equipment Association is having another busy year having attracted over 25 new members in recent months, participated in two industry exhibitions and published its 34th annual Directory. The Association recently elected a new

team from within the industry to mastermind its activities, headed by President, Chris Shoebottom of Albion Design and Fabrication Ltd, and Vice President, Alan Pegram of Global Display Projects. This was quickly followed by a new networking event in July, the sdea Summer Barbecue held in the walled garden of a wonderful old London Pub. The new team has some radical ideas for

the future, most of which are still under wraps, but the secretariat at the Association’s headquarters in Caterham have revealed that their Christmas Lunch will be held at a new venue, as yet unnamed, in London’s Covent Garden on 3rd December and their ninth ‘Meet the Buyer’ event will take place on 22nd January 2014.

As we come in to the Autumn season, with lots happening over the next few months in the retail industry, we have a catch up with three of the leading industry associations and see what they have in store for the next few months and what they think the industry will face: challenges and benefits.

Shopfittings and display buyers are currently being invited to contact sdea if they would like to take part in the latter. As the Association’s Director, Lawrence Cutler, says “there is no cost to the buyer but potentially huge value in sourcing new suppliers” Looking again to 2014, sdea is currently

offering grants of £1,500 each to businesses in the shopfitting, display, retail lighting, signage, PoS and exhibition systems industries which are looking to increase their exports by exhibiting at EuroShop in Düsseldorf next February. The grants are administered by sdea and financed by UK Trade and Investment, the Government department tasked with helping UK businesses succeed in international markets. On the day we spoke to Lawrence Cutler

he had just signed off the August issue of the Association’s newsletter, Shoptalk, and reported having covered more new product ranges and ‘good news’ stories from his members than ever. Surely a sign of an industry on the move.
