Innovation Award for TDR Sensor VEGAFLEX 82

Clemens Hengstler and Birgit Wolber accepted the award from the hands of publisher Gerd Kielburger (right in picture) and Deputy Chief Editor of PROCESS, Dr. Jörg Kempf (left).

The four journals Process, Process

Worldwide, PharmaTec and Schüttgut (Bulk Solids Handling) handed out the Innovation Awards for 2013 during the POWTECH trade fair. They were looking for the most innovative equipment and methods in mechanical process technology in six different categories. The criteria for the award were the degree of innovation, the quality and profitability for users, the existing applications as well as the presentation of the product. The specialist jury awarded the winners at the official awards ceremony on the first evening of the fair. VEGA Grieshaber applied for the Innovation Award in the category ‘Process Measurement

and Control Technology / Automation’ with the new VEGAFLEX 82 guided wave radar sensor and won. The decisive factor for the jury's decision was the instrument’s ease of use in combination with many new features: First, the automatic probe end tracking function that switches on automatically, for example, if the product signal becomes too unreliable, the instrument then outputs the probe end signal, which is stable and exactly proportional to the product level. Second, the automatic false signal suppression, which dynamically adapts the signal processing to changing process conditions, e.g. the formation of heavy build- up on the probe. And last but not least, the improvements to existing features: e.g. the new quick start function and the memory that stores up to 100,000 readings, 500 events and 10 echo curves indelibly with real-time stamp. The TDR sensor VEGAFLEX 82 is specifically tailored to the needs of the bulk solids industry. Applications range from large volume bins to 75 metre high silos, and from light, fine powders to heavy, coarse gravel. New intelligent algorithms, such as probe end tracking and automatic false signal suppression increase measurement certainty in these applications. In addition to reliable measured values, the most important demand made of the new TDR sensors is simple setup and commissioning. Email: info.uk@vega.com www.vegacontrols.co.uk Tel: +44 1444 870055

Rhys Davies ships woolly mammoths

The team at Rhys Davies Freight Forwarding are no strangers to unusual cargos, but when the call came in to ship a family of woolly mammoths from Cardiff to Norway, even manager John Lyon was a little taken aback. The hairy family of three had been commissioned by the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjaerland and created using fibreglass by bespoke display fabrication company, Wild Creations in Cardiff. The life-size exhibits – the largest is almost three metres tall – were carefully loaded onto a jumbo trailer (real name), for shipment via Tilbury to Gothenburg and onward by road to Fjaerland. All arrived safely and were later installed outside the museum by technicians from Wild Creations. “The job was certainly unusual but the guys at Rhys Davies did an excellent job,” said Wild Creations’ Managing Director Matthew Wild.

“This was the first time we’d had items as large as this to send to Norway and we were unsure how to go about it and the paperwork involved. But despite the potential difficulties and the destination being very remote it was all in a day’s work for the guys at Rhys Davies and everything went without a hitch. Amazingly their forwarding manager John Lyon actually knew the area and had visited the museum a few years ago, so he knew exactly where they were going.” Rhys Davies Freight Forwarding has been operating for over 20 years and has developed close working relationships with trusted partners across the globe. Local knowledge and personal contacts are key to the company’s success.

Although transporting three woolly mammoths to a remote area of Norway may seem a little tricky, some shipments are even more challenging. For example, one customer regularly sends refrigeration gasses in 40 ft tanks to the Middle East, including Libya and Syria, so reliable contacts and an in-depth knowledge of the regulations is essential; especially in a war zone. Other contracts handled by Rhys Davies include shipping food ingredients from the Far East, skin and beauty products from India and transporting photocopy paper for offices throughout the world. The ECO24 on display at Plantworx 2013

Cabin Pressure Rises for AJC at Plantworx

At the inaugural UK construction machinery expo, entitled Plantworx, and under their EasyCabin brand, AJC Trailers exhibited one static and two mobile cabins from their expanding range of site welfare products. Throughout the three days of Plantworx, AJC showcased their static ECO24 welfare unit, alongside the mobile ECO16 and ECO12 cabins. The ECO24 boasts a complete line of environmentally sensitive features and benefits; including a power preserving low voltage auto-start system that ensures the integral generator only operates when required. It has a heated canteen area catering for up eight persons and with PIR activated, energy saving LED lighting, an operators fuel bill is kept to an absolute minimum.

Alongside the ECO24, AJC placed their very popular, and equally environmentally biased mobile welfare unit, the ECO12 Junior. The ECO12 hosts up to five persons with a separate re-circulating flush tank toilet and a spacious drying room. This very compact unit has been constructed to withstand the rigours of a modern day construction rental fleet, yet has an un-laden weight of just 1,640kg. Completing the Plantworx line-up was the ECO16, with its separate drying and toilet, helping to provide modern, essential site welfare facilities for up to ten persons. AJC have been manufacturing mobile units since 1964, outgrowing several production facilities, until finally settling their headquarters in a modern 32,000 sq ft plant based in Luton, Bedfordshire. The company remains a family concern, keeping a hands-on approach to all management routines, with innovation as the key word in all procedures. They have inherent operations to ensure that all EasyCabin welfare units comply with The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. AJC regularly monitor for any proposed amendments or additions to these regulations and are prepared to meet with future changes to the law.

Plantworx 2013 had over 100,000sqm of exhibition space and included live action of construction machinery, plant, tools, and services demonstrations. The organisers claim that nearly 12,000 visitors came to Plantworx over the course of three days. Email: lisa@ajc-trailers.co.uk Tel: 01582 486663
