Flooring and Tiling
Getting ready for Europe F
rom July the requirement for all products sold within European boundaries to have harmonised, certified and classified European performance standards will result in the need to mark all construction products, such as tile adhesives.
CE marking is presently adopted in EU member states under the Construction Products Directive (CPD), but is not a legal requirement in the UK. This will change in July following the adoption of the Construction Products Regulations (CPR), which replaces the CPD and encompasses the UK. There are several areas in ‘construction’ where products have normalised standards; as a consequence they will require a CE mark if they fall under the following statement:
Comment by Martin Cummins Technical Sales Manager, Ultra Tile
“Any product or kit which is produced and placed on the market for incorporation in a permanent manner in construction works or parts thereof and the performance of which has an effect on the performance of the construction works with respect to the basic requirements for construction works.” (Source: Construction Products Regulation) There is a normalised European standard for tile adhesives, EN 12004, which falls under the above remit, and the changes being implemented introduce the requirement for independent assessment and auditing of this already widely
Three adhesive categories
There are 3 categories for adhesives, which are: 1. Cementitious type products (Type C) 2. Dispersion products (Type D) 3. Reaction resin products (Type R) To simplify these can be referred to as single part bag products, ready mixed bucket products and specialist products where chemical reactions are required for the adhesive (epoxy adhesives would be a typical example).
On the product’s CE mark there will be a classification of adhesive based on the above. The CE mark classification will help with adhesive selection and ensure that you get/sell what is correctly needed for the job.
used classification method. The test methods include a test for tensile adhesion, resistance to slip, performance at specified open time and deformability.

Ultra Tile: on the menu at Pret U
ltra Tile products have been used to transform a number of Pret A Manger shops nationwide.
Homemade natural food retailer, Pret A Manger opened their first shop in 1986 and have grown significantly since. Today the company has 240 UK shops with many more new openings planned for 2013.
Last year 20 of their shops were refurbished and The Great Northern Tiling Company completed all the tiling installations. Each refurbishment included 2 tiling projects – the toilets and shop area walls. The modern and stylish metro shaped tiles in ceramic were used in the toilets, and the unusual and unique brick slips were fixed to the shop area’s walls. Brick slips require a specialist application and therefore test areas were carried out initially and Ultra Tile ProFlex SP was selected following its pleasing bond results. The adhesive’s performance is rapid setting for faster completion, and it accommodates movement due to the product’s S1 classification. ProFlex SP is ideal for use with low- absorbency tiles and has exceptional water resistance, making it suitable for use in wet areas and swimming pools.
ProFlex SP is one of Ultra Tile’s leading cementitious adhesives and due to its popularity and for job suitability, 5kg, 10kg and 20kg bag sizes are all available. The product has a pot life of 40 minutes and can be laid at bed thickness from 3-20mm. Consideration was given to the preparation of the floors and walls and Ultra Tile Prime IT FP was used to stabilise the background substrates and reduce their porosity. This primer is available in 2.5ltr bottles.
26 BKUAPRIL 2013
To provide the perfect finish, Ultra Tile FlexJoint grout was selected. FlexJoint has been specifically formulated and polymer modified for tiles with joint widths of up to 20mm, and for most tile types and applications. It has excellent joint filling properties and a super fine texture, allowing for joints to be filled in one simple application making it an ideal choice for fixers, and providing a smooth, non- coarse finish.
Lastly, The Great Northern Tiling Company completed the job with stainless steel corner trims purchased from

The refurbished shops now sell good natural food in the surroundings of good stylish tiling.
