How Retailers Are Using POS To Maximise Diminishing Store Space

The face of retail is undergoing a dramatic change and retailers are being forced to adapt if they want to survive in a market where technology is now such a driving force.


Consumers have instant online access to product information, which is changing the way stores are designed and stocked, and the size of stores needed. There is a definite trend towards consolidation, less stock holding, and smaller store sizes, with retailers having to embrace technology to compete effectively. We are working with retail outlets to develop self‐service kiosks in store that allow consumers to order an item that is currently out of stock or unavailable in their size. This helps to ensure that the sale is captured and, since goods can be delivered to the store ‐ which is great for customers who work nearby ‐ the result is an incremental increase in sales when customers purchase additional items on their return to pick up the original order. By using intelligent POS systems, retailers are able to improve their stock

control as they gauge which product lines are selling well and stock their stores accordingly. This also helps to improve distribution and potentially to reduce costs further, since retailers can assess, for example, which brands sell well in the north of the country and which in London; leading to much smarter, more focused selling.
