Industry Insight: Rob Fothergill

The Retail Interiors/shopfitting sector moves at such a pace, there is always something happening or a rush for the client to get the right candidate in place whether it be Project Managers and Account Managers for a large job they just won or an estimator to cope with all the tenders their clients are throwing at them. I’ve worked as a Recruitment Consultant at Straco International for over 2 years, specialising in the Retail Interiors market, during my time in this market I’ve noticed my clients are more receptive to change, looking at different avenues, many looking at other areas where they can apply their trade, such as in the commercial and leisure sectors. The margins out there are still very tight and the competition on each tender has increased. In recent times a lot of the manufacturing which has been outsourced to other countries has started to come back to the UK, which is great news for the industry and the UK economy. Despite the recession and a less than buoyant market place in recent years, focusing on building lasting relationships with clients has been key, whether the client are global shopfitters or small independent companies who are seeking to grow and develop their team in order to push forward, but its more than just finding and placing candidate’s with our clients, it’s the added value of the industry knowledge that myself and Straco International have. On a daily basis I am talking to clients and candidates from all parts of the Retail Interiors market, this allows me to gather a lot of information of what’s happening in the industry which I am able to share with candidates and clients. For example, last year I was approached by a large manufacturing company who had recently undergone a takeover and the new owners approached me to utilise my industry experience and knowledge, passing on information regarding suppliers and industry news, based on the information I was able to provide, the company have now gone on to make a further three key appointments to the business who are going to be moving the business forward.

“Straco have invested in the team,

strengthening in areas which will allow us to explore different markets. Under our Straco Temping division, we also supply temporary, contractual and freelance candidates, who are at hand to cover busy spells, or holiday cover or a much needed spare pair of hands that are required to get the job out.”

Over the next few years the natural progression from the Retail Interiors market will be to expand into the Construction industry, expanding our services further whilst still focusing on building and sustaining relationships with all candidates and clients.
