Market driving demand for RFID-based products and applications across the supply chain

t Murata we see the demand for UHF RFID products is a growing market. This demand goes across all existing solutions such as Bar Code devices. We do see that currently HF RFID-based devices have a very limited


potential for further evolution. Our believe is that, today, only UHF RFID provides the potential to replace current solutions while still keeping some degree of reserve for future adaption’s such as more data capability. From a broader perspective, the UHF technology leaves the constraints of industry - or application specific use, and significantly contributes to the never ending revolution across the supply chain. In addition, the use of UHF RFID in Anti Counterfeiting for many goods is a strong driver across many industry sectors to attack present, costly and well- known problems of product piracy. We also expect a


growth of the UHF standard in several new application sectors such as like in the Laundry and Fashion trades. We are also focusing our efforts into the new market in the electronics industry where UHF RFID is being used for PCB Traceability where our Magicstrap can be easily implemented. If industry looks for a solution that can be adopted


worldwide (EU, US and JP) covering RFID tag functionality and for adapting tags to specific use cases like Printed Circuit Boards very flexibly by various antenna designs to get the target tag read-range without coping with sensitive antenna to chip matching, they should consider Murata Magicstrap devices by just adding it to the printed circuit board. potentials in many manual operations in the process chain. We have several key strategies that we are adopting in


the short to medium time. One is to enable the customer to better understand UHF RFID as the preferred system of choice to address and solve ever-day problems in counterfeiting, logistics, quality control, returns management, inventory and process control. Another key focus for us is to establish Worldwide and European agreements with the key players in the various sectors such as like the System Integrators, the UHF readers providers etc. We aim to provide the extended Partner Network with all the knowledge, technology and tools so that customers can fully leverage the benefits of RFID. Key to this strategy is to facilitate by use of existing system blocks from Infrastructure down to core elements, like Magicstrap in the Tags. Murata concentrates on the tag-side and contributes with its knowledge of small size and easy to handle components. We are establishing partnerships with other RFID system stakeholders to make it easy for customers to start UHF RFID evaluation and win the customers with convincing functionality. For example, at the recent Cebit show in Hannover, we gave a live demonstration of our MagicStrap UHF tag-IC


for pcb-tracing applications with our partners Kathrein and RFIT Solutions. We are a member of AIM, the association for automatic identification and mobility, and actively participate in their industry initiatives. So far RFID solutions are used in specific industries


and applications for specific purposes. However, new applications and use cases are joining and steadily broadening the use more and more. Moving forward, we see UHF RFID can enable these different use cases and for them to converge to a global standardized technology with the possibility to have a much broader reach across industries and applications.
