of the modern battlefi eld without signifi cant increases in SWAP (size, weight and power) and/or price, embedding the future war fi ghter in the digital battlefi eld.”

aunched alongside DSEi by London-based Smiths Detection was Sensa-LINX, a wireless


communications system that integrates with its suite of deployable chemical threat detection sensors used in military and emergency response applications. Operating on licence-exempt frequencies, Sensa-


LINX enables two-way communication between a command post and remote sensors designed to detect chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. Repeaters can also be used to extend the range if necessary. Data from the sensors, such as detection results, identifi cation and geo-location, is transmitted back to the remote command post. The company says the rugged system can


improve both situational awareness and early- warning response to chemical threats and is ideal for a range of applications such as perimeter protection, surveillance and reconnaissance. At high-profi le events or in emergency response situations, Sensa- LINX can integrate data from temporary fi xed-site sensors or from patrols equipped with handheld or wearable sensors. “Integrating wireless communications with threat


detection improves situational awareness, ConOps [concept of operations] and communications”, explained Andrew Lee, vice president of sales for integrated systems. “It simultaneously helps provide a timely response while minimizing risks and loss associated with changing threats.”

ecure networking solutions provider Selex Elsag, a


Finmeccanica company, used the DSEi to unveil its major new contract with the Scottish Government for the supply of a secure public safety voice and data satellite communications solution for the country’s offshore islands.


Making the announcement on the third day of the exhibition, the company said its solution would provide the Scottish Government with “robust and resilient” voice and data communication systems in the event of some “catastrophic failure of traditional communications” on the Shetland Islands, Orkney or the Isle of Lewis.

As part of the plans, a headquarters facility will be provided in Edinburgh, linked by secure encrypted satellite communications to the three archipelagoes. In addition, a mobile trailer unit will be held on the mainland to provide a deployable communications centre. According to the company, the deployable trailer aspect of the solution is expandable by adding either more fi xed sites or additional trailers. Connected by Very Small


Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite links, the system will work independently of existing communications provision on the islands, which currently relies on a combination of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and cable-based infrastructure. In the event of a power


failure, uninterruptible power supplies will support the telecommunications equipment for up to six hours, with the possibility to extend this time with generators.
