Eastern Conference-leading Dream slips past Mystics in overtime Langhorne finishes

Washington’s 86-79 loss by Katie Carrera As Atlanta Dream forward An-

gel McCoughtry stood on the free throw line, sinking two more shots to put the finishing touches on another win for the Eastern Conference leaders, the faces of the Washington Mystics dropped. Saturday night’s con- test was one they could have won. After playing a nearly flawless

with 23 points in

third quarter, the Mystics ap- peared to be in firm control be- fore Atlanta’s 23-point fourth quarter forced overtime, where the Dream earned an 86-79 victo- ry. In the final 15 minutes of the game, Atlanta outscored Wash- ington, 34-19. The loss is the Mystics’ first at

Verizon Center this season, while Atlanta snapped a two-game los- ing streak to improve to 7-2. Even before McCoughtry’s free throws and Iziane Castro-Marques’s lay- up as time expired, Washington (4-4) had opportunities to keep the game close in overtime. Na- kia Sanford, Katie Smith and Mo- nique Currie all missed shots in the final 16 seconds.

At the end of the game Wash-

ington simply had no answer for McCoughtry, who along with teammate Erika DeSouza each scored a game-high 23 points. The Mystics’ Crystal Langhorne also tied a career high with 23 points and added eight re- bounds. It was a far cry from the team

that exhibited so much confi- dence heading into the fourth quarter. The Mystics were up by eight points, had not committed a turnover in the third frame and displayed plenty of swagger. But in the next six minutes At- lanta, led by Castro Marques, who tallied 10 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, fought back and snatched the lead for the

first time in the second half off a jump shot by McCoughtry with 4 minutes 8 seconds left to cap a 19-10 run.

With 1:04 remaining in reg-

ulation though, reserve guard Matee Ajavon continued her pen- chant for late-game heroics and hit a three-pointer to knot the score at 75. The waning moments were a sign of things to come for Washington, as they couldn’t capitalize on any opportunity to prevent the game from reaching overtime. Heading into their matchup with Atlanta, the Mystics un- derstood that taking care of the ball was of the utmost impor- tance. With two teams alike in their preference for a fast-paced

15-day disabled list The Nationals placed catcher Carlos Maldonado on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right thumb fracture. Maldonado said the injury occurred during the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday in Houston. The team called up catcher Jamie Burke from Class AAA Syracuse to fill Maldonado’s roster spot.

With a runner on first in the

bottom of the fifth inning, Houston left fielder Carlos Lee tipped a pitch that ricocheted off Maldonado’s thumb. Maldonado continued to play until he was pinch-hit for in the top of the ninth.

“I was concerned that there might be a little break in there because it seems like anything that happens to people’s hands, once they get X-rayed a couple times they usually find

something in there,” Manager Jim Riggleman said Saturday. Maldonado said adrenaline dulled the pain in his thumb immediately after the game, but the appendage started to bother him on the flight back to D.C.. By the time the flight landed, Maldonado’s thumb was throbbing. He tried to grip a ball, but couldn’t. X-rays taken Friday revealed a

crack on the tip of Maldonado’s right thumb. Riggleman said Maldonado can swing a bat, but still can’t grip a ball enough to throw. Burke, 38, began the season on the disabled list, but batted .278 (5 for 18) in six games for Syracuse. The Nationals also

As baseball umpires have faced harsh criticism across the league, the Nationals joined the critical chorus after the 4-2 victory Friday night over the Reds. After protesting a balk call from his outing Friday, starter Liván Hernández revealed he

Hernández said. “I don’t say nothing. I said, ‘Bad call.’ And I got fined for $500. I didn’t think Iwould have to pay for that because I said, ‘Bad call.’ The guy was swinging. Everybody watched the video. I don’t make the mistake. The umpire made the mistake. “After the game, I say, it’s a

strike. And I got fined $500. Don’t fine me. Fine the umpire. I don’t make a mistake. Everybody knows who watched the video, who watched ‘Baseball Tonight.’ We lost the game right there.” Hernández was also critical of Friday night’s home plate

transition game, the group that displayed more precise passing and could quell the other’s fast break attempts would likely come out on top. “Last year every game was tight with Atlanta,” said point guard Lindsey Harding, who added 10 points. “They’re the team to beat in the East right now and it’s a game that means a lot to us.”

Although the Mystics were able to corral or keep pace with Atlanta for the first three quar- ters, by the game’s end the Dream torched them for 23 fast- break points and outrebounded them, 44-38. Washington’s 21 to- tal turnovers also cost 26 points. carrerak@washpost.com
