TOUR COORDINATOR Alice B. Dufault, 90, who


worked for the Air Force and later coordinated tours for the Kennedy Center, died May 30at her home in Annandale. She had cancer. Mrs. Dufault worked for the Air


Force as a civilian administrative officer until shortly before the birth of her first child in 1957, tak- ing assignments in Hawaii, Lon- don and the Panama Canal Zone. Her husband’s Air Force postings also took the family to Germany, France and Belgium. From the late 1970s to the late


’90s, Mrs. Dufault worked at the Kennedy Center, where she coor- dinated tours of the theater. Alice Elizabeth Burke was born


and raised in Carbondale, Pa. She moved to Washington in the early 1940s and found a job with the forerunner of the Air Force. Mrs. Dufault was a member of


St. Michael Catholic Church in Annandale. Her husband of 25 years, re- tired Col. William F. Dufault, died in 1981. Survivors include four chil- dren, William F. Dufault Jr. of Vir- ginia Beach, Anne Dufault Ander- son of Midlothian, Va., Vertume Thomas Dufault of Alexandria and Mary C. DiGiulian of Annan- dale; two sisters, Emma C. Burke of Washington and Rosemarie Burke Kennedy of Manassas Park; one brother, Leo Burke of Vestal, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren. —Emily Langer


Adelaide E. Newburger SOCIAL WORKER, ACTIVIST


Adelaide E. Newburger, 93, a social worker and community ac- tivist, died May 28 at Roland Park Place, a nursing home in Balti- more, of multiple organ failure. Mrs. Newburger worked for the


Children’s Home Society of Vir- ginia in the 1960s. While living in Panama during the 1950s, she worked with the Panama Social Security Administration and was a newspaper columnist. She relo- cated to Washington in the early 1960s.


Adelaide Josephine King, a na- tive of Boston, received a bach- elor’s degree in economics and so- ciology in 1938 from Barnard Col- lege and a master’s degree in social work in 1940 from Colum- bia University. In the early 1960s, she was a member of the National Demo- cratic Committee and head of the Panama Canal Zone delegation. She also was a member of the Woman’s National Democratic Club.


During the 1970s and 1990s, she was the Washington represen- tative for the Panamanian Com- mittee for Human Rights. Her husband of 46 years, Rich- ard Eisenmann, died in 1986. Her husband of six years, Dr. Robert A. Newburger, died in 1993. Survivors include two children from her first marriage, Eve E. Brooks of Washington and Rich- ard K. Eisenmann of Baltimore; two stepchildren, Dr. Peter E. Newburger of Waban, Mass., and Dr. Mary N. Korn of Santa Fe, N.M.; and six grandchildren. —Lauren Wiseman

Lori Ann Eilers, my loving wife and traveling companion passed away May 23, 2010. I will forever love and miss you. Lori was born in Silver Spring, MD to William and Delores Jones on August 30, 1957. She graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1974. Lori greatly enjoyed fishing and crabbing the Chesapeake Bay area and Delaware coast. We married in 2001 and continued on excellent expeditions throughout the U.S. and Mexico. Lori was predeceased by her parents, sister Ellen Miller, and brother Albert Jones. She is survived by her husband Paul, her brother Grover Jones, brother William, Jones, sister Linda Nastick, and sister Sue Weiss. A graveside service will be held on June 11, 2010, 10 a.m., at Parklawn Cemetery.

Of Great Falls, Virginia died June 3, 2010 from complications due to a hip fracture. François Haeringer was born to the late Ernest and Cecil Haeringer on January 6, 1919 in Obernai, in the French province of Alsace. Following the birth of their first son, Haeringer began working at the Three Musketeers on Connecticut Ave. In 1954 he took over the restaurant naming it Chez François. In 1973, Haeringer learned that the Claridge Hotel, Chez François’ home, was to be sold. At the age of 56 he followed his dream to build an auberge, a country inn reminiscent of Obernai. The new restaurant L


1976 and featured authentic French decorative art and family heirlooms in its décor. Today the restaurant is much the same as when Haeringer “Papa” first opened it. Haeringer’s spirit as well as his meticulously crafted meals infuses every table and every customer. He was a culinary icon in theWashington, D.C. cooking community and helped to set the standard for authentic French food that satisfied your appetite and your soul in a restaurant known for marriage proposals, celebrations of all kinds and family memories. JOAN RUTH BERKEY HOLM (Age 76) Of Annandale, VA, died May 27, 2010, following pancreatic cancer surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Born September 20, 1933 to the late Helen Annie Minto and William Eugene Berkey in Pittsburgh, PA, she earned a Bachelors of Arts in 1956 from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and a Masters of Arts in 1973 from the University of South Florida, Tampa. Two daughters were born to her 1955 marriage, which ended in divorce. For thirty years, Holm was a highly regard- ed professor of speech and communica- tion, at the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), Alexandria Campus. She lived her passion for social change and the democratic process by befriending and advocating for people of all backgrounds, religions, and sexual orientation, serving on the Diversity Committee at NVCC, and through active membership of Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington . In addi- tion, she loved books, jazz, theatre and was an accomplished artist. She volun- teered on the Obama presidential cam- paign. Joan Berkey Holm was the beloved mother of Karin Holm Randall and husband, Karl, of Geneva, Switzerland and Susan Evelyn Holm and husband, Carl Hildebrandt of Pittsburgh, PA, and informally of Somany Pum Owen and husband, Tim of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandmother of Markus Randall, Leo Hildebrandt, Tobias Hildebrandt, Claire Hildebrandt and Chansayrai Owen. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Evelyn Parker and husband, David of St. Mary’s, Ohio; nieces, Cherie Lyn and Jules Dowling; a grandnephew, grandniece, great-grand- nephew and numerous cousins and rel- atives. Holm’s motto was “Friends are the family you choose,” and her friends spanning the globe remember her with gratitude.
