Turning to church
Patty Griffin has always excelled at sad and lonely songs, so it was a bit surprising to find out that her new album would be a gospel collection. Uplift and inspiration have never really been her forte. “Downtown Church” still has some downers, but even the dirgelike “Death’s Got a Warrant” has a hint of hope, thanks to lively harmonies. Meanwhile, “Move Up” and “I Smell a Rat” are as much rockabilly as religious. Griffin’s voice is as captivating as ever, and she sings with authority and tenderness. Inspiring
In the dance piece “Diagnosis of a Faun,” the work that went into the production may be as important as the finished work itself. The performance, part of the VSA (Very Special Arts) Festival spotlighting artists with disabilities, was partly inspired by the show’s star, Gregg Mozgala, who was born with cerebral palsy. Yet, while working with choreographer Tamar Rogoff, Mozgala developed the ability to control parts of his body he had never fully commanded.
