CL AS S NO TE S

hopes to make it to our 60th reunion. A letter from Joan Stevenson Brennan vividly details her 2009 adventures from Norway (old cities, deep fiords, and tum- bling waterfalls) en route to an explora - tion of Arctic fauna (walruses, reindeer, seals, and polar bears). Later, it was on to Indonesia to snorkel twice a day off the Raja Ampat Islands coral reefs and enjoy “a week of indulgence” on the island of Bali.

Although “slower and creakier,” Anne Rayner Korjeff and Mike keep busy and enjoy every minute with their four grand- children. They divide their time between their residence in Holden, MA, summer stops in New Hampshire and Cape Cod, and three months in Desitin, FL. While recovering from knee replace-

ment, Roslyn Newman Wolin discovered

that Celeste Schnur Stone lives within driving distance. An old acquaintance not forgotten, Celeste paid a visit to Roz, the self-described “bionic woman” with two new knees and one new hip, who can now keep on dancing!

Playing bridge “to allay Alzheimer’s,”

Barbara Churchill Thompson and

George travel when not keeping up with children and grands. In 2009 a boat trip from Copenhagen to Lisbon was on the itinerary; this year it’s a leisurely explo- ration of the French canals. For Barbara Hunt Burner in Westchester, IL, keeping up with four active grand- daughters brings much pleasure. A music club, exercise, teaching English as a sec- ond language, and several responsibilities at her parish church are all on her daily schedule. A spring visit to her sister and friends in the Tampa area was a welcome break.

Dorothy O’Keefe Dube finds life placid and delightful, including travel, commu- nity activities, and visits to children and grandchildren. Also, she takes “lots of naps.” Doke regularly gets together with Margaret Laydon Sbabo, who also lives in North Haven, CT, in the summer; re - tired since 1993, Midge and Don spend six months in Fort Meyers, FL. Their first great-grandchild was born last July, the same month Midge underwent open- heart surgery. She says that was “not a fun thing to do for the summer,” but hap- pily she is now fine. Sydney Bartlett Tansi sent in sad news of the death of her dear friend Nancy Ashley Byrne in October. It had been dif- ficult to watch Nancy waste away from kidney failure; she died of heart failure in an ambulance en route to the hospital. Syd says Nancy’s husband, Harry, was

won derful with her. He kept her at home as much as possible and wouldn’t leave unless someone else was there to be with her. At her memorial service, her pastor and each of her five children spoke of her love of life, family, and Christian devo- tion. They noted her positive attitude and how she’d “beaten so many odds for so long that some of us were convinced she would live forever!”

Patti Price Zeiler reports that their Fort Lauderdale, FL, group of classmates—Pat

Knight Spencer, Tillie Ruby Coulter,and

Jackie Welsh Barr—get together to laugh often. Patti talks to former roommate

Nancy Colbourne Harding every Sunday.

“We are all fine, and there is much love between us and Skid more.” Patti’s hus- band, Martin, will soon be 90, which she also finds funny.

ThePullings1955@yahoo.com. Phyl Bartlett Towle has relocated from Franconia, NH, to a comfortable five-room condo in Hanover, virtually on the cam- pus of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Cen - ter. The Towles are renting out their Fran - conia home for a year. Phyl (PhyllisTowle@ hughes.net) would like to make contact with other Skidmore alumni in the Han - over area.

Carolyn Ruscoe Burt (Rustyparty@aol

.com) winters in Sarasota, FL, and sum- mers in Darien, CT, allowing her to see friends and family, including seven grand- daughters. After two hip replacements, Rusty is doing water aerobics to stay lim- ber and for cardio fitness. In August she visited a friend in Italy who has Parkin - son’s disease. She says, “I hope classmates are coping with what aging throws at us.” Jackie Loohn Stempfle and Bill celebrat- ed their anniversary in August on the same day as B.A. Kalteux Callanan and John did; the coinciding dates kept them from attending each other’s weddings years ago. Jackie now counts each day past the 50th as “extra special.” She and Bill have three grandchildren in college; the other five are in high school. The couple love living in North Carolina and encour- age classmates to visit them.

Ginger Meneely Stephens (GSteph2065

@aol.com) and husband Geoff have lived in Tampa, FL, for 50 years. Still sailing, they again spent Thanksgiving on their boat. They also enjoyed trips to Machu Picchu and the Galápagos last February and Nova Scotia and Maine in August. She won’t be able to make Reunion be - cause they’ll be visiting his family in Wales and England.

Audrey Schmierer Deren (Schmaudie@

gmail.com) reports her husband, Julie, finally retired from 51 years of medicine (the last 42 in gastroenterology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsyl - vania)—a big adjustment for Audrey! He teaches part-time at the Penn medical school. They spend winter in Longboat Key, FL; their son lives in Winter Park, and they visit him on weekends. Their eldest granddaughter is graduating from college, which Audrey finds hard to believe.

Carol Stewart Schneidewind reports

that Phyl Bartlett Towle and Dora

Gisiger McWhite were planning a mini- reunion in Venice, FL, in March. Carol and husband Gil finally sold their home and are settled in a condo. They have three great-grandchildren. Carol is happy to be volunteering at her church office and the local soup kitchen. Her mother died in September at the age of 99. Carol invites anyone coming to Maine to visit. She can be reached at car01@gwi.net.

Connie Swedlin Sultan’s daughter-in-

law is on the staff of the Whitney Mu - seum in NYC and recently took Skidmore President Philip Glotzbach and wife Marie on a tour of the exhibits. Con nie also re - ceived a long letter from Ethel Binner Caravias, her NYC nursing-program room - mate. Ethel lives in Wash ington State and is having great fun with her four wonder- ful grandkids. Connie frequently sees Ron - nie Brody Raab at concerts, the opera, and other events in NYC.

Nancy Wind Ross (nross@nep.net) lives

in Uniondale, PA. She misses Ellie Bough - ner Axford, who moved with husband Pete to Charlotte, NC.

Soon after having her kitchen remod-

eled, Nancy Passaro Whittaker had

Christmas dinner for 37 people at her house. Among the guests were her chil- dren, grandchildren, and great-grandchil- dren, plus two dogs.

The class extends its sympathies to the

family of Virginia Cresswell Brewster,

who died in October. We remember Ginny most of all as a bubbly freshman living in Furness House, always talking about “Brew.”
