give and go // CHARLEY TOOMEY
The Loyola coach, a 1990 grad, can’t live without the water as a longtime Marylander
What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome? My looks. I got my wife to marry me, so even a blind squirrel fi nds a nut.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Easy. I’d be a charter boat captain and get to be on the water every day working between the Carolinas and Maryland and then go down to the Florida Keys during the winter months.
If you could take only three things with you to a deserted island, what would they be?
My boat so that I could go out and fi sh, my family, and plenty of sunscreen. I have a Scottish-Irish background, so I would struggle with the sun.
Do you have any pregame rituals? My one ritual is to go to Evergreen Café on Cold Spring Lane to get an
everything bagel toasted with cream cheese, a medium coffee with cream and two Sweet and Lows. Gotta have it.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
If it was my last meal before I die, it would be a soft-shell crab sandwich. If it was every day, that would be more of a challenge, but I think I’d go steak.
What type of animal best represents you as a coach and former player?
A tiger. I go back to what Dave Cottle used to say when I was a player: “A hungry cat hunts best.”
If you could invite three historical fi gures to dinner, who would they be?
Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy and Harry Truman. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
After we lost the national championship on Memorial Day in 1990, on Wednesday I was on a plane to Australia by myself for four months. I didn’t know a soul there and didn’t have a friend with me.

OVERTIME (from Stanford defender Adrienne Anderson)
What would be your go-to karaoke song? “Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra.
DOUBLE OVERTIME (@toastastrudelya) Would you have been able to save any of
[Loyola’s 2012 NCAA Championship MVP] Eric
Lusby’s playoff shots? Scouting Eric Lusby, I would have seen that when he
shoots off-hip it goes waist or higher. I could’ve picked one off. 64 LACROSSE MAGAZINE » May 2015
