28. MIKE MANLEY
TEAM/POSITION: Rochester Rattlers, D AGE: 27
HOMETOWN: Penn Yan, N.Y. HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-1, 204 COLLEGE: Duke
Rochester’s defense was almost four goals per 45 possessions worse without him (from an 11.1 defensive rating to 14.9) in 2015. His take on his injury: “Just because I injured my knee doesn’t mean anything. I injured it a lot worse in college and came back an All-American. I’m bigger and stronger than I was before the injury, now I’m just getting my footwork back.” The 2014 MLL Defensive Player of the Year now has extra motivation to reclaim that title.
Karalunas Brian 31
Tyler Fiorito
29 30. NED CROTTY Team/Position:
Rochester Rattlers, A Age: 29
Hometown: Mount Vernon, N.J.
Height/weight: 6-2, 185 College: Duke
Crotty has scored 20-plus goals in a season just once. He also only has one season with more than 20 assists. Sadly they were the same season way back in 2011. Other players say, “Ned does all the little things and it’s not all about points for him.” Never a me guy, always a we guy, fans still want Crotty to score the 30-plus points Rochester will need from him.
29. TYLER FIORITO
TEAM/POSITION: Boston Cannons, G
AGE: 26
HOMETOWN: Phoenix, Md. HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2, 200 COLLEGE: Princeton
In his first season as a full-time starter with Chesapeake last season, Fiorito became the fifth goalie in MLL history to post a save percentage higher than 60 percent — joining Jordan Burke (’11), Greg Cattrano (’02), Brian Dougherty (’06) and Tillman Johnson (’04 and ’06) — and did so despite facing a league-high 30.1 shots on goal per game. After Burke’s retirement, Boston acquired Fiorito via trade in the offseason, giving up a package of young players and draft picks.
25. BRODIE MERRILL
TEAM/POSITION: Boston Cannons, D AGE: 34
HOMETOWN: Orangeville, Ont. HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-4, 205 COLLEGE: Georgetown
Scott Ratliff’s dominance at LSM allowed Merrill to move to close defense last summer. The Cannons defense was 1.4 points per 45 possessions better with Merrill (22CT, 33GB) in the lineup. Now that Ratliff is in Atlanta, Merrill may be asked to move back to LSM. Can his legs sustain the grind of the MLL season following an NLL season?
24. WILL MANNY
TEAM/POSITION: Boston Cannons, A AGE: 24
HOMETOWN: Massapequa, N.Y. HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-9, 160 COLLEGE: UMass
Manny wasn’t supposed to star at the MLL level. He was too short. Didn’t attack with determination. Was only a system
player. He didn’t have an MLL skill set. A handful of coaches said those things before Manny was drafted. Yet, he is thriving to the tune of 3.5 points per game. Manny is part of the next generation of MLL stars, guys who continue to improve season after season by working tirelessly as a coach (currently an assistant at Wagner) in the offseason.
laxmagazine.com June 2016 » LACROSSE MAGAZINE 27. KYLE HARRISON
TEAM/POSITION: Ohio Machine, M AGE: 33
HOMETOWN: Baltimore, Md. HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-0, 194 COLLEGE: Johns Hopkins
Before leaving MLL to pioneer the LXM Pro Tour, Harrison was scoring 2.02 points per game and shooting 20.4 percent. Since returning to the league, he has improved his scoring (2.19 PPG) and efficiency (27.1-percent shooting). His improved efficiency and incredible leadership have been essential to the Machine’s back- to-back playoff appearances.
26. KEVIN BUCHANAN
TEAM/POSITION: Boston Cannons, M AGE: 30
HOMETOWN: Cockeysville, Md. HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-11, 180 COLLEGE: Ohio State
Manny and Buchanan working the two-man game on the right wing generated close to 25 percent of Boston’s six-on-six goals. “His leadership and attitude are what separate him,” teammate Craig Bunker said. “He is the kind of guy everyone wants to play with. You will never not have fun on a team with Kev.”
