STICK » Maintain a high

awareness. If you don’t know where the defenders are, you’re more likely to hang your stick and they could check the ball right out. Hold your stick close to your body.

SPEED » Move as fast as

possible so you can put yourself in a good position to shoot. If you have open space on your left, switch to your left hand for a better angle.

» When you pick up a ground ball in the middle of the 8-meter, you’ll likely be on top of the goalie, so it’s really important to throw a fake. Fake high, shoot low, or fake low, shoot high. Don’t go high-to-high or low-to-low. The goalie can track that easily.

FAKE BOX OUT

Boxing out your defender is your first step. Get low and scoop the ball up in one fluid motion. If your whole body is low, that minimizes the distance your stick has to go. It will help you get to the goal faster or run out of defensive pressure in the 8-meter.

HANDS

Keep both hands on your stick. Get your bottom hand low and your top hand right on the ball.

PROTECT

Once you pick up the ground ball, keep your stick in between your shoulders so you’re able to pass, shoot or keeping running with it. Don’t leave your stick hanging.

PLAN B

If you’re not able to pick it up yourself, try to knock it out of a scrum with your stick, or with the new rule, you can kick it out too.

laxmagazine.com T A SECOND MOM

Kenul’s mother, Donna DiFalco Kenul, was treated for two years at Johns Hopkins’ cancer center before she died of multiple myeloma Oct. 4, 2008. Emily Kenul ultimately chose the school because of its strong reputation and family-like atmosphere. “Hopkins has honestly been the best thing I could ask for,” she said.

“Coach Janine Tucker is like everyone’s second mom. She really cares about you in every aspect of your life.”

GOALIE » If the goalie is

caught off guard, shoot as fast as possible. If she’s still coming around the crease, and there’s a big open net, definitely shoot on the open net. Otherwise, if the goalie is out far on the crease, shoot around her with a sidearm shot.

he shot clock will be huge. The self- starts this year were a little bridge to make way for the shot clock, but I think it will make it really exciting. Games will be way more watchable and a lot more fun, too. It may be more stressful, but I like the idea. Make your one opportunity count to get a good shot off. Teams won’t be able to sit on the ball very long.
