The Future is Here
MYLES JONES GOES PRO Duke’s Myles Jones, a
Tewaaraton finalist and the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s Major League Lacrosse draft, is ready to be the black superstar in a predominantly white sport. “It’s always been something I had this vision of, what I would mean to the game of lacrosse,” Jones said in an interview with Vice. “The African-American community in urban areas is really excited about the game, but seeing a face that’s like them will give those kids some energy to want to go out and throw a ball against the wall.”
Terrence Rembert
O DURHAM
Now Rembert strings his teammates' sticks. He shapes the mesh, pulls the strings tight, never sloppy, and adds a signature: At least one of the strings must be pink. “My mom’s favorite color,” he said. “It’s how you know I strung it. I keep it like a symbol that my mom is still there.” Rembert’s own stick is entirely pink and with two pink stripes down the pocket. “This stick symbolizes how much my mom meant to me,” he said. “This is the first stick I played with and the first stick I scored a goal with.” That goal came against a team from the Doc’s league, where Ward’s career began. “Coach Ward has taught me a lot, just like my mom did,” Rembert said. “Life without my mom, I’ve had to become more of a young adult. I had to work more, and HLL has been helping me with that.” Rembert will outgrow his gold cleats. But he sees high school ahead, and beyond, college. And through a year of terrible loss, lacrosse has taught him a familiar rule. No matter what, keep moving.

MLL co-founder Jake Steinfeld sees Jones as the future of lacrosse. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder is the No. 2 scoring midfielder in college lacrosse history — behind only the iconic Gary Gait — and will suit up for the expansion Atlanta Blaze this summer. “He’s got a lot riding on him, not for us but for him, for the brand of Myles Jones,” Steinfeld told Vice. “Because it could be huge. I hope he knows he can be the beginning of something great in terms of diversity in our sport.” — M.D.
