Standing in solidarity with the hungry
Hunger is an often invisible problem in our society. An estimated 48 million Americans—including more than 15 million children—live in food insecure households, mean- ing they lack adequate access to enough food to maintain a healthy diet. As part of Ignatian Heritage Month, Loyola called attention to this important issue with its annual Hun- ger Week, a collection of events to raise both awareness and funds to support organizations devoted to ending hunger lo- cally, nationally, and globally. This year’s event raised money to support three nonprofit groups: A Just Harvest, Feeding America, and Action Against Hunger.
Capturing a ‘cannonball’ moment
ST. IGNATIUS WENT FROM THE LIFE of a soldier to a life of service after being injured by a cannonball. This year’s Ignatian Heritage Month photo con- test asked entrants to show their own “cannonball” moment—an experience that led them to see themselves in a new light.
WINNER CLAIRE KRONENBERGER “After my brother passed away, every day seemed to be filled with his memories … For this photo- graph, I projected a home video of my brother’s 10th birthday onto a wall, and then positioned myself in front of it … This picture represents the memories that I will always be surrounded by. That moment changed the way I understood grief.”
RUNNER UP EMILY CARRENO “I felt like my life had crashed to the ground when the doctor told me, ‘The surgery was more complicated than expected.’ They had to remove a tumor the size of a baby and an additional cyst from my ovaries … This punishing experience opened my mind to the possibility of studying medicine. I want to help other people who are struggling as I did.”
