ALMA MATTERS


Robert W. Hernquist (JD ’07) joined Howard & Howard: Law for Business and will practice out of the firm’s Las Vegas office. Hernquist focuses on all aspects of commercial and complex civil litiga- tion, including shareholder disputes, banking and real estate matters, and business torts such as fraud, unfair trade practices, and misappropria- tion of intellectual property.


Dr. Connie L. Mic (PhD ’07) has a new book entitled Poverty/Privilege: A Reader for Writers (Oxford University Press), designed for composi- tion courses and for courses on poverty studies. She has another book forthcoming from Oxford University Press in 2017, which focuses on ethical writing, titled Good Writing: An Argument Rhetoric and Reader for Writers.


Malini Rao (JD ’07) joined Dilworth Paxson LLP as an associate in the litigation department. She previously worked as an associate at Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP in the Qui Tam and Commercial Litigation groups and repre- sented whistleblowers in federal and state courts.


Nicole M. Vilendrer (BA ’07) published her first novel, Power Play. The fictional tale is a public policy-meets-hockey-meets-love story set in Min- nesota. Publisher’s Weekly calls it a “Midwestern contemporary” with a “hero and heroine who feel real enough to step off the page.”


Jennifer M. Ballard (JD ’08) was elected to part- ner at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. She practices labor and employment matters.


Laura Colón (BA ’08) married Lucas Baker at Ma- donna della Strada Chapel on November 8, 2014.


Ryan Flynn (BA ’08) was accepted into the Peace Corps and departed for Indonesia to train as a secondary English education volunteer. Flynn will teach basic to intermediate English and provide


enrichment learning opportunities through extracurricular community activities.


Diane L. Laffin (MA ’08) is an architectural historian within the Highway Archaeology Divi- sion of the Nebraska State Historical Society. She conducts statewide archival research and field surveys of the NE Department of Roads’ proposed highway projects, and documents properties/dis- tricts and evaluates their potential for eligibility to the National Register.


Dennis C. Gray (BS ’09) and his wife, Tuyet, had their first child, Isaac Thai Minh Gray, in February 2015. Dennis was also promoted to manager at Premier International, a niche consulting firm specializing in data migration.


John E. Maki (JD ’09) was appointed by Gov. Bruce Rauner to head the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.


Lisa I. McLeod (JD ’09) was appointed to serve as a 2015-2016 Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) committee member, serving for the General Practice Solo and Small Firm Section Council. She was also selected as one of The National Black Lawyers’ Top 100, joining the exclusive ranks of black lawyers across the country who epitomize exceptional skill and outstanding achievements.


2010s


Katherine Morton Earnest (BSN ’10) graduated from Northern Illinois University with a master of science in nursing this past May. She was named nurse manager of the stroke rehabilitation unit at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.


Samantha F. Herman (JD ’10) is poised to release her first feature film, Let’s Rap, on various online platforms. The film is about a hapless brother and sister with a gift for pop culture infused banter who embark on an ill-conceived quest to get their own talk show.

Jeff Zacharias (MSW ’10) is being honored as the 2015 Social Worker of the Year for the NASW IL Chicago District.


Trevor Currie (BBA ’11) is a member of the WHD commercial finance, corporate transactions, and emerging companies teams in the Milwaukee office. Previously he worked as a legal clerk at the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office.


Dr. Erin R. McNeely (MD ’11) has joined Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital as a general internist for the Robert A. Mesropian Center for Community Care.


Edna Flowers (BSW ’12, MSW ’13) is being hon- ored as the 2015 Emerging Leader of the Year for the NASW Illinois Chapter.


Marina Karp (JD ’12) was named associate direc- tor of Navigant’s Center for Healthcare Research & Policy Analysis. Karp will lead the Center’s primary research and trend analysis initiatives.


Daniel M. Staren (MS ’12) joined the Intellectual Property group at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP. He earned his J.D. cum laude from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. Staren also attended the University of Illinois, where he earned his BA in psychology with a minor in biological sciences.


Mario Garcia (LLM ’13) joined Anthony Robbins, Robbins Research International as a master peak performance and business results coach. Garcia is a professional certified coach with the Interna- tional Coaching Federation and a master mental game coach certified by Peak Performance Sports. He has coached more than 50,000 clients in 55 countries in both English and Spanish.


Josephine Pebenito (MJ ’13) accepted the new position of assistant director of nursing at Lin- denhurst Surgery Center in Lindenhurst, Illinois, a syndicated surgery center by Vista Medical Center, in April 2015.


Saythala Phonexayphova (MA ’13) is a contrib- uting author to the recently published The Strong Gray Line: War-time Reflections from the West Point Class of 2004. The book includes a tribute to each of the 14 classmates who lost their lives fighting the global war on terror, as well as 13 personal es- says that detail some of the most brutal fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.


Serj Mooradian (JD ’14) was added as an as- sociate to Barnes & Thornburg LLP in its health care department.


Marcus Morrow (JD ’14) joined Segal, McCam- bridge, Singer & Mahoney as an associate. He fo- cuses his practice on the defense of civil litigation and toxic tort claims.


Chase F. Vedrode (BBA ’14) has been appointed a college unit captain at Northwestern Mutual’s McTigue Financial Group in Chicago. Vedrode takes on a leadership role with the internship program and will assist in the training, devel- opment, and mentoring of college financial representatives.


Alexandra K. Hunstein (JD ’15) has been awarded an Equal Justice Works Fellowship.
