FROM THE INTERIM PRESIDENT JOHN P. PELISSERO, PhD
justice is a testament to our students’ commitment to the Loyola mission. Winifred Williams, PhD, vice president for human resources and chief diversity officer, and I will continue to work with University administrators, enrollment managers, student development staff, and others to make progress on these impor- tant issues in the spring semester. We have made significant progress toward the goals outlined
in our new University strategic plan, “Plan 2020: Building a More Just, Humane, and Sustainable World.” Members of the Strategic Plan Implementation and Steering Committee have been hard at work all semester to prioritize the plan’s strategies and to begin implementation efforts to help us realize the plan’s institutional priorities. Many of the stories in this issue of the magazine are connected to our first institutional priority related to ensuring student access and success. You can learn more about Plan 2020 online at

I have the privilege of serving as Loyola’s Inter- im President this year. As a faculty member in the Political Sci-
ence department since 1985, and an administrator since 2003, I’ve been deeply engaged with the University for the majority of my professional career. It has been rewarding to meet with so many Loyola alumni and friends this year to share news about the many good things that are happening at the University. It’s been a busy and productive fall semester here at Loyola.
This year, our total enrollment is at an all-time high, including the most undergraduates in our history. Arrupe College opened in August with nearly 160 students who are pursuing their as- sociates degrees on our Water Tower Campus, and we launched an Engineering Science program with 35 freshmen who are studying either biomedical, computer, or environmental engi- neering. Additionally, for the first time, Loyola was named a top 100 national university in U.S. News & World Report’s latest rankings of best colleges. These are just a few of the highlights you will read about in this issue of Loyola magazine. We have been working closely with students who in No-
vember came out in large numbers to stand in solidarity with students from the University of Missouri and who highlighted concerns on our own campus regarding the need to recruit, retain, and support a greater diversity of students at Loyola. The active engagement of our students on issues that promote
representation across our campuses was formed and is being chaired by Bob Parkinson (BBA ’73, MBA ’75), chairman of our Board of Trustees. The committee convened more than a dozen “listening sessions” on the Water Tower, Lake Shore, and Health Sciences campuses in early December so that search committee members could hear directly from students, faculty, and staff regarding the qualities and experience they believe are impor- tant for the next president of Loyola. The Isaacson, Miller search firm has been hired to assist us with this effort, and information on the search is available at
LUC.edu/presidentialsearch. Lastly, as I shared with the University community a few
weeks ago, I have asked Patrick Boyle, PhD, vice provost for academic centers and global initiatives, to serve as interim pro- vost beginning January 1. You can read more about Dr. Boyle’s appointment on page 9. We are indebted to Sam Attoh, PhD, who has very ably served as interim provost for the lakeside campuses since July 1, and before that as dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for research. I hope you have a very happy and healthy new year.
Sincerely,
John P. Pelissero, PhD
