Looking for a

Northeast Oklahoma is lucky to have a cache of talent--musicians, painters, wood carvers, metal arƟ sts, and writers--to name a few. On a mission to showcase some of our oŌ overlooked talent, I encountered two published authors in our area: Missy Nicholas of Pryor and Deborah Collins of Ketchum. Both were kind enough to oī er their Ɵ me and give insight regarding their books.

Letters to Love Missy Nicholas

Dear Love,

I know I haven’t found you yet because every man is sƟ ll a distant second to a good book and a bubble bath.

Cross-eyed and water logged, M

issy Nicholas delivers a story of discovery in LeƩ ers to Love in an easy-to-read book. OŌ en, personal journeys weigh heavily

as you make your way through them. You can devour this book from start to ⇒ nish, or treat the read like a daily devoƟ onal, with each page a new, changing experience.

What compelled you to write LeƩ ers to Love? I’ve wriƩ en since I was a child. I’d always wanted to publish a book. I NEVER thought it would be this book. These were journal entries during my single life, not wriƩ en exactly like you see them in the book but very similar. My niece, who is an amazing editor and avid reader, was going through some of my work trying to help me decide what to work on for publishing. She said “Here is your book!” I said, “No. That’s my journal, my tears, my heartache. . .” She’s one of those people you just trust, especially when it comes to literature. So we re-worked how they were wriƩ en and she edited them so beauƟ fully that it worked! She sent it back to me two or three Ɵ mes to bring up to current Ɵ meline because I hadn’t wriƩ en in that journal for several years. She’s a brilliant editor.

What made you decide to personalize Love, making it a character? That’s how I wrote these in my journal. I was never solely looking for a man, a husband, a life change. . .I was always looking for love housed in a man. Like many of us I wanted acceptance, a place to land, purpose, passion, etc. . . And because that’s how I viewed it, I actually found love in so many diī erent ways and forms outside of daƟ ng and men. But, when we do ⇒ nd it in another person I think it’s important to remember that’s what they have done for us. So personalizing it made it easier to recognize and remind myself of, because love doesn’t always feel like love!

4 - NE Connection

In your book, you are honest about self-doubt and temptaƟ ons, but you conƟ nued to embrace your values and self-worth. Does it serve as a how-to for others? I think that balance of being honest about our doubts and temptaƟ ons as we grapple with our values and worth is important. It’s honest and authenƟ c. Values, morals and faith are easy when they are theory. They can get diĸ cult when challenged. I think we as people can get preƩ y oī course when we are searching for anything. To stay tethered to our values and our sense of self during a search for anything can be preƩ y diĸ cult. If it is a how-to of sorts for anybody I pray that it merely lets others know that you don’t have to lose yourself to obtain or maintain love. That if you desire for others to honor your values then you ⇒ rst must honor them. And hopefully it would help others know that they aren’t alone in their desire to keep that balance. *817063*

Can you highlight the message you would like all readers to take away from LeƩ ers to Love? Oh, I think for me the biggest lesson was to realize that love is not something that somebody brings to us or something we ⇒ nd. Love is not something we “fall into” or “fall out of.” Love is something we culƟ vate and become. If you want love in your life then don’t go out looking for it in another person. Become it yourself!

Is another book in the works? If so, will it be a follow-up to LeƩ ers to Love? I am working on another manuscript. It, however, is not a follow-up to LeƩ ers to Love. Although I’ve had people tell me that the follow up should be the parenƟ ng version, which actually is a preƩ y good idea. It’s on the idea list.
