Journeys For more than two million European emigrants from 1873 to 1934, the journey to the New World began in the warehouse of the Red Star Line shipping company on the Scheldt River in Antwerp. Today that warehouse, and other Red Star buildings, make up the Red Star Line Museum, alive with the hopes, dreams, and anxieties of people preparing for an ocean steamer voyage to a better life. It was here that a five-year-old Russian boy named Izzy Beilin embarked; you might know him as Irving Berlin. Filled with stories, documents, and interactive exhibits of emigration past and present, the Red Star Line Museum invites you to walk in the footsteps of passengers, both humble and celebrated, including Albert Einstein, who was a regular guest onboard the Red Star ships. One Red Star employee described him as “a brilliant man, but not a difficult person.”

Filled with charm, the quarter offers you a look at nicely intact historic warehouses, merchants’ mansions, and quays. On a walking tour discover Dordrecht’s notable architecture and monuments in its medieval inner city and surrounding ring of 19th-century buildings. After lunch on your riverboat, you’re off to the nearby village of Kinderdijk, where 19 original windmills create an iconic polderscape that’s better than any picture postcard – nowhere else in the world can you see so many windmills together in an authentic setting like this.
