7. A TREASURE TROVE IN ANCIENT TRIER A morning excursion brings you to Trier, Germany’s oldest town, and once a residence for several Roman emperors; reminders of that period include a 2nd-century city gate and a basilica built in 310 AD. Discover the town and its Marktplatz, marked by a 16th-century fountain that features images of St. Peter, surrounded by the “virtues” of righteousness, strength, temperance and prudence. Spend some free time in Trier this afternoon, then continue cruising the Moselle. Meals BLD
8. CRUISING THE RHINE & A CASTLE DINNER As your riverboat departs the Moselle, returns to the Rhine and winds its way through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley en route to Rüdesheim today, listen to onboard commentary highlighting the legend of the Lorelei, and see for yourself why this beautiful part of the river – declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich legacy of riverside castles, medieval towns and terraced vineyards – has inspired composers, writers and artists for centuries. Upon arriving this evening in Rüdesheim, disembark for a special reception and dinner with entertainment ashore at either Schloss Johannisberg or Burg Schwarzenstein; perched in the mountains amidst vineyards overlooking the Rhine near the city of Wiesbaden, these historic venues have been producing notable wines for hundreds of years. THE KRÖLLER-MÜLLER
MUSEUM sits in the Veluwe, a region of woods and dunes in the eastern Netherlands, where Helene Kröller-Müller purchased land with the intent of building a grand museum for her collection of 11,000+ art objects, purchased between 1907 and 1922. They include 91 van Gogh paintings and works by Picasso, Mondrian and Seurat, and sculpture by Rodin, Moore and others. When hit hard by the Great Depression of 1929, she donated her collection to the Dutch state. Today the works are housed in this museum at the center of De Hoge Veluwe National Park, forming an internationally renowned center of nature, art and architecture – where some 1,700 white bicycles are available free to enjoy the park’s quiet and space.
