11. EXPLORE PRAGUE’S CASTLE DISTRICT Prague’s Castle District (Hradcany) is rich with palaces, churches and monasteries. Your walking tour includes Golden Lane, an alleyway where 16th-century goldsmiths and alchemists once set up shop; a choice of Rosenberg Castle (once a palace for indigent, unmarried noblewomen) or the Loreto Sanctuary, dedicated to the life of the Virgin Mary (subject to time and availability); and of course, magnificent Prague Castle itself. The residence of the Czech president, this complex of palaces, defense towers, courtyards, gardens, and museums surrounding St. Vitus Cathedral dates back to the 9th century and features nearly every architectural style of the last thousand years. The afternoon is free for exploring on your own with perhaps a visit to the famous Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square, a marvel of medieval engineering that tells time and the positions of astral bodies.
