THE CITY WITHIN Amsterdam has more canals than Venice. Besides its three main concentric canals, it has hundreds of connecting

What began as a defensive moat around the medieval town grew into a masterpiece of urban planning in the 17th Century, facilitating the movement of people and merchandise around the port city.
