In Ayrshire, near Symington, a former Chapel with links to the world’s most famous and prestigious golf competition has been turned into a luxury four-bedroom home using a mixture of traditional features and modern design.
CDP Architects painstakingly restored it over five years as part of a multi-million pound renovation of Coodham House, the historic mansion once home to James Ogilvy Fairlie, the creator of Prestwick Golf Course and the man who started the Open Championship 155 years ago.
“Churches present a lot of problems when it comes to turning them into something they were never intended to be,” said Willy Findlater of CDP Architects.
“We basically had a big, tall hall with huge windows which we managed to divide up into smaller rooms which would be suitable for a domestic space. It could only be done by puting in extra floors.
“We sub-divided The Chapel into 92

four levels, two of which are living areas which meant puting a steel frame in first to allow us to put the floors in. It was hard going, but on the plus side we now have these magnificent double living spaces.
“The other thing is that churches tend to be joined to other buildings so you might not have windows on each floor and they tend to be long, thin spaces which can make circulating air around them difficult.”
In The Chapel, which is on the market for £599,000, the original full scale windows have been kept as has the painstakingly restored stonework.
“It’s important to maximise the power of the original features without it appearing to be ecclesiastical. In terms of The Chapel we got around this by adopting a modern approach other than keeping the original stonework.” said Mr Findlater.
“People don’t necessarily want to feel like they are living in an actual church so we had to be sensitive to that.”
The Chapel at Coodham forms part of a spectacular development which has turned a ruined country house into a model of 21st century luxury living.
