Glenarn is famous for its collection of rare and tender rhododendrons, up to 700 of them, together with fine magnolias and other heath trees and shrubs.


A miniature Himalayan glen runs through the garden full of large-leaved rhododendrons, ferns and naturalised plants such as narcissus and primulas. A large rock garden is built round an old quarry used to build the house, providing habitats for smaller plants such as meconopsis, erythroniums, dwarf rhododendrons and many bulbs in season.


Glenarn’s 10 acres of mature garden is probably the last surviving example of a mini-Victorian estate created for the aspiring middle-class professionals and merchants who, having made their money in Glasgow and throughout the empire, built magnificent houses along the Clyde in the mid 19th
