“You need to see through the idea that there could be a host of people who are at it and abusing the system. It’s a myth. People don’t come here to get their messages. They come here for emergency food.”
People who are referred to the
food bank by care professionals such as doctors, health visitors and social workers are given a three- day emergency supply of non-perishable, nutritional food. Items include milk, 500g of sugar, fish and pasta.
In addition to cooking tips, advice on how to build stronger relationships with others, how to cope with stress and information on where to go for help with housing worries is also available.

“We had a woman who couldn’t tell her mum, her kids or her partner that she was using a food bank,” said Jane.
“She was suicidal the day she came here. The only people who she had told was us. That puts a huge responsibility on us.
“We had to call her later on, when it was appropriate to do so with her permission, and encourage her to engage with her doctor, with Samaritans and Breathing Space services.
“A volunteer needs to have compassion for clients.”
