YRSHIRE’S famous Dunlop cheese, recognized for its special nuty flavour, has been given protected status by the European Union.


The Ayrshire delicacy now ranks alongside other famous protected Scotish food products such as the Arbroath smokie, Stornoway black pudding and Orkney cheese.


None of these products can be made outside their areas, guaranteeing the public always gets the genuine product rather than imitations.


Dunlop cheese can only be made in and around Dunlop using milk from Ayrshire catle. Fed on lush pastures that enjoy favourable rainfall and clay soils, Ayrshire cows are famed for their rich milk.


The origins of Dunlop cheese and its unique production method can be traced back to the 17th century. The ancient recipes were revived in 1989.


Richard Lochhead, the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and Environment, said protected status for Dunlop cheese was an important boost for Scotland’s dairy sector.


He said: “We now have 14 Scotish dairy products benefiting from protected status and I hope more will follow.”
