Oats are synonymous with Scotland and there can be no doubt about it’s place as a superfood. A staple ingredient in many traditional dishes; the English Lexicographer, Dr Samuel Johnson described the Scots in his dictionary as ‘oat eaters,’ The same dishes are still eaten today, porridge, brose, skirlie, cranachan or cream crowdie.


Seaweed harvested around the islands and along the west coast has undergone a renaissance in recent years. Scotish producers are supplying top restaurants throughout the country and a variety of dried seaweeds is available in food stores. It rightly deserves a place on the new super list. Nutritionally low in fat, almost calorie free, while at the same time contains more minerals than any other kind of food. A popular staple and free food if you know what you’re looking for.


In the quest for a healthy diet there’s no shortage of ideas to add to the list. Scotch beef and lamb, game, Scotish cheeses to name but a few.


Despite this abundance, the Scots do not enjoy the best reputation when it comes to healthy eating. The current Scotish diet is condemning people to a life of ill health or worse, an early grave. As Shirley Spears, Chair of the Scotish Food Commission said recently, ‘Somewhere along the way in the great puddin race, we took a wrong turning.’


A recent report from Food Standards Scotland, ‘The Scotish Diet: It needs to change,’ makes bleak reading. Somewhere along the line the Scots have lost their appetite for healthy food - “Scotland is now tipping the scales in the wrong direction. Like most of the western world, Scotland eats too much of the wrong food.” The report goes on to say that everyone needs to shiſt their mindset and change.


Seaweed rightly deserves a place on the new super list.

It would be naive to think that change will happen overnight the poor diet is deep rooted. Scotland has lost contact with some of it’s natural healthy food. Will the superfood list bring an appetite for change? Aſter all it looks like Scotland has all the ingredients to be a trend seter on the international food stage.
